NEDERLAND, Colo. - Joachim Lien won his second race of the season and
Roni Remme earned her first podium of the year for the Utah ski team in the slalom races at the Colorado Invitational on Thursday, Jan. 16, as the Utes moved into the team lead in overall standings.
Utah overtook Colorado in the team standings, holding a 324 to 312 lead with Denver third with 301.5 points. Utah has won the alpine portion of both meets held this season.
Lien earned his second win and third podium finish of the season. He has won both slalom races that have been run this year and his three podiums is second in the league. Utah had four total skiers in the top 10 with
Addison Dvoracek second,
Tomas Birkner ninth and
Gustav Vøllo in 10th to give Utah a team-high 87 points in the race.
Huston Philp finished 23
rd.
"Fun to get back-to-back wins in slalom," Lien said. "Happy that the team came back strong today to grab another invite win for alpine. We're going to keep pushing and I hope people will show up in Park City for our next invite in February."
Remme, who is in her first races with the Utes after skiing on the World Cup circuit, has 11 career podium finishes.
Katie Vesterstein finished in the top 10 for the second time this year with a seventh-place finish while
Eirin Engeset placed ninth for her third top-10 finish of the season.
"Our skiing was awesome and the whole day was awesome," head alpine coach
JJ Johnson said. "Everyone is bought into the plan and are working on their skiing within that and everyone is seeing results. It's cool to see that. Everyone is dialed in and is having a blast. They're such a machine right now. We've asked a lot of them and they've done a lot in return. That really shows where the team is. Joachim has that awesome balance and mindset going, he's just going about his business and is so dialed in. He always wants more. I am trying to get him to enjoy it a little. Tomas and Freddy are quietly doing their thing. Freddy has stayed calm in his progression and training, he's been taking steps and making adjustments and it's paying off. Addison had two solid runs, his plan was to ski with a long leg and as in control as he could, and if he gets some more slalom training he will bring his slalom to the level of his GS. The ladies were focused and really bounced back today.
Katie Parker had an awesome second run. Roni had a big mistake her second run but skied how she could the rest of the way and dang near won the thing. She came back from being away and is right back part of the team. Eirin hadn't trained much slalom and we made a plan and she did her job. I'm looking forward to attacking a training block of slalom with her. She knows what to do and goes out and does it. Katie V is consistently there every run, she is just a step or two away from really seeing where to be on the different courses and I think we'll see her on the podium this year.
"We want to finish strong tomorrow, get home safely and then we start it over again. Excited for the rest of the year."
Teams will participate in an RMISA slalom qualifier on Friday, which does not count towards any team scoring and is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season. Also on Friday, Colorado will host a dual slalom exhibition event.
The Nordic portion of the Colorado Invitational commences on Saturday, Jan. 18, with the freestyle races.
