SALT LAKE CITY – After the Utah alpine ski team started off the NCAA season last weekend, the Nordic team gets in on the action this weekend as both teams head to the Colorado Invitational.
Alpine heads to Eldora Mountain for the giant slalom on Wednesday, Jan. 15, followed by the slalom on Thursday, Jan. 16. On Friday, Jan. 17, the teams will participate in an RMISA slalom qualifier, which does not count towards any team scoring and is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season. Also on Friday, Colorado will host a dual slalom exhibition event.
Nordic heads to Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs for the women's 5-km and men's 10-km freestyle race on Saturday, Jan. 18. The 15-km women's and 20-km classic races will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Alpine is off to a strong start with the Utes leading the Denver Invitational after their four races of the meet. For the men,
Joachim Lien earned his first career victory in the slalom race while
Addison Dvoracek finished second in the giant slalom. Utah's men were the top scoring team in the GS and tied for the points lead in the slalom. For the women,
Eirin Engeset finished third in both giant slalom races over the weekend, at the DU Invite and in the RMISA qualifier race.
Sona Moravcikova was one of two skiers in the league to finish in the top 10 in all three races. Several other skiers had career-best results over the three races.
Roni Remme also joins the Utes in Eldora after missing the first weekend at the World Cup in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, finishing 12
th in alpine combined.
In Nordic,
Julia Richter competed this weekend at the World Cup in her home country in Dresden, Germany, placing 50
th in the freestyle sprint. Other skiers recently competed at the U.S. Cross Country Championships with
Luke Jager winning the boys 10-km classic title and qualifying for the World Junior Championships while
Logan Diekmann qualified for the U23 World Championships. The Utes return every skier from last season, including six-time All-American
Guro Jordheim, reigning NCAA 5-km freestyle champion Richter and two-time All-American
Maximilian Bie, while adding Jager and
Samuel Hendry, who have had strong results during the fall.
