OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team now heads west on I-10 as it prepares to take on the Bruins of UCLA this Sunday, Feb. 2, for a 1 p.m. (MT) tip-off inside Pauley Pavilion on an extra day of rest. Alex Faust will have the call on Super Bowl Sunday alongside former UCLA head coach Steve Lavin on FS1 with the Utes looking to split the road swing with a win.
Â
SCOUTING THE BRUINS
Sunday's contest will be the 21st meeting between the two programs with UCLA under the direction of new head coach Mick Cronin.
Â
When the two teams take the floor at Pauley Pavilion, it will be the 12th time the Runnin' Utes have paid a visit to Westwood to battle the Bruins. In those 12 visits, the Utes are just 4-7 and 2-4 when playing in LA during conference action.
Â
The Bruins are currently 11-10 on the year 4-4 in league play after toppling No. 20/21 Colorado, 72-68, on Thursday. UCLA nearly led wire-to-wire against the Buffs at home and at one point held a 15-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half.
Â
Junior guard Chris Smith led the way for UCLA with a career-high 30 points and nine rebounds while Jamie Jaquez Jr. and Prince Ali each scored 13 points and 11 points, respectively. The Bruins took advantage of 13 offensive boards against the Buffs for an 18-10 edge in second-chance points. Additionaly, UCLA scored 22 of its points on fast break opportunities to Colorado's 12 and beat CU in the battle of the glass 39-29.
Â
Smith is the lone Bruin averaging in double-figures with 13.0 points and 5.4 rebounds to go with a .477 shooting clip. However, there is a logjam of four players all within a couple points of averaging in double-figures. Jalen Hill is just off the mark, checking with at 9.7 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game to go with his team-high 23 blocks. Jaquez Jr. is next on that list, averaging 8.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals while Ali is not too far behind him with 8.3 points per game.
Â
Tyger Campbell, who had just three points against Colorado after getting injured last game at Oregon, is the team's floor general. The 5-11 redshirt freshman has dished out 87 dimes this season while averaging 6.6 points for the Bruins.
Â
THE PVD SHOT
The last time Utah was at Pauley Pavilion, the game ended in dramatic fashion as
Parker Van Dyke drilled the game-winning 3-pointer to complete a 22-point comeback for the Utes, 93-92, last season. That 22-point comeback is tied for the largest deficit any Pac-12 team has overcome the second half to date.
Â
Timmy Allen led the Utes that day with 22 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting.
Sedrick Barefield had 19 points and seven assists while
Riley Battin had 18 points and eight boards. Van Dyke finished with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, all from 3-point range.
Jayce Johnson also added nine points and 10 rebounds in the shootout.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
A late scoring lull in the second half proved too much to overcome for Utah as it let a nine point lead with 12:34 to go slip away in the 56-52 loss to USC on the road this past Thursday. Despite a tough night shooting from the field, the Utes were able to take a 29-23 lead against the favored Trojans at half. The Runnin' Utes had opportunities to first retake the lead with 42 seconds left to go as well as to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining, but couldn't capitalize.
Â
Jaxon Brenchley, who started in the place of
Both Gach, hit a pair of threes for the Utes to go with five boards while
Timmy Allen led a group of four Utah players in double-figures with 13 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Carlson chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting while
Rylan Jones added 10 points. Like Allen, SoCal native
Riley Battin nearly had a double-double as well – finishing the night with 10 points and nine boards.
Â
The USC front court of Nick Rakocevic (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Onyeka Okongwu (11 points, 11 rebounds) did a lot of the damage for USC with both players registering double-doubles. Meanwhile, Elijah Weaver and Jonah Mathews added 14 points and 13 points, respectively, for the Trojans.
Â
UP NEXT
Utah returns home to the confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center where it is 8-1 on the season to entertain Stanford (Feb. 6) and California (Feb. 8). Both games are set to air on Pac-12 Network. In addition, former Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill will be honored at the Cal game for his 31 years of service to the University of Utah.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD
After a stint at home, Utah hits the road once again and head the Pacific Northwest for a pair of games against Oregon State (Feb. 13) and No. 11/12 Oregon (Feb. 16). The Thursday game in Corvallis will air on Pac-12 Network while the Sunday game against the Ducks will air on FS1. Both contests are set to tip-off at 7 p.m. (MT).
