The Utah men’s basketball will open its three-game road swing facing its fourth ranked team in five games Sunday.
OPENING TIP
When the University of Utah men's basketball team takes the floor at the CU Events Center on Sunday, Jan. 12, against No. 25/RV Colorado, it'll be the fourth team in five games that the Utes have faced that are ranked in the AP Top-25 Poll. Roxy Bernstein will walk us through the 52nd meeting between the Utes and Buffs while Corey Williams serves as the analyst on the ESPNU broadcast at 4 p.m. (MT).
 SCOUTING THE BUFFS
When the only two teams in the Pac-12 that play at elevation squares off, it'll be the 17th time Utah and Colorado have met on the hardwood floor in conference play with a 10-6 advantage in favor of the Utes. However, the Buffs hold a 5-3 edge over the Utes when those games are played in Boulder.
Â
Colorado is 12-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in Pac-12 play after opening the conference slate with a 74-65 upset over then-No. 4/6 Oregon at home, where the Buffs are 7-2. The two losses at home for CU have come at the hands of UNI (79-76) and Oregon State (76-68).
Â
Offensively, Colorado is well balanced with three players averaging in double-figures while three other players are averaging at least 6.5 points. Junior McKinley Wright IV, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, paces Colorado with 13.4 points and 4.9 assists per game to go with his 5.3 rebounds per game. Tyler Bey, a 6-7 guard/forward combo, is averaging 13.1 points with a team-high 9.6 rebounds per game. His 7.33 defensive boards per game is first in the conference and ranks 21st nationally. D'Shawn Schwartz rounds out the double-digit scorers for CU at 11.0 points per game thanks to his team-leading 32 triples. Meanwhile, Evan Battey owns a team-best .553 shooting clip to go with a 9.5 points average and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Buffs.
 TOP OF HIS CLASS
Sophomore Timmy Allen isn't showing signs of a sophomore slump as the 6-6 forward leads the league in scoring with 21.1 points per game while also averaging 34.41 minutes of action – which is second most in the Pac-12. The Mesa, Ariz., product is also seventh in rebounding (7.86 rpg) and third in defensive rebounds (6.71 drpg).
Â
Through two games after the opening week of league play, Allen is averaging 22.0 points and 10.5 rebounds for the Utes – which ranks first and third in the league, respectively. In addition to playing hard for the home crowd, where he's putting up 22.9 points per game and 7.4 rebounding average, Allen has also performed well for the Utes on the road – averaging 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two true road games.
 #GACHYA
Sophomore guard Both Gach had his best game as a Ute in a near loss to No. 4/6 Oregon at home, posting a career-high 24 points – including 14 in the second half. The 6-6 guard also registered a triple-double earlier in the year against MVSU with 12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Through 14 games for the Utes, Gach is averaging 12.9 rebounds, 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists with a .428 shooting clip.
 THE POWER OF 2
Through games on Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Utes have capitalized their opportunities both in the paint and in two-point opportunities checking in at No. 15 in the country according to KenPom with a 55.6-shooting percentage in the two-point field goal percentage category.

LAST GAME OUT
The Utah men's basketball team clawed its way out of a shooting slump in the opening minutes of the game to keep within arms distance of then No. 4/6 Oregon and trailed just 36-31 at the half thanks to the long ball. The Utes were 0-for-7 to start the game from 3-point range before finishing the half 5-of-10 despite being outscored in the paint 24-10.
Â
Utah then went toe-to-toe with the Ducks in the second half, matching Oregon point for point. Despite Both Gach scoring 14 of his career-high 24 points in the second frame and Timmy Allen notching his second double-double in as many games, scoring lulls proved too much to overcome as No. 4/6 Oregon sneaked out of the Jon M. Huntsman Center with the 69-64 victory. Â
 UP NEXT
Utah continues its three-game road swing and will have a short turnaround as it heads to the Southwest to play Arizona (Jan. 16) and Arizona State (Jan. 18). Should Arizona continue to stay ranked after this weekend's games, the Wildcats will be the fifth team in six games that the Utes have faced that is ranked in the AP Top-25 Poll. In addition, it will be just the second time since joining the Pac-12 that Utah will play Arizona first on the southwest swing.
 LOOKING AHEAD
Utah returns home after a three-game road swing hosting Washington (Jan. 23) and Washington State (Jan. 25) inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utes will look to put an end to the two-game skid against the Huskies while hoping to add on to its 11-game win-streak against the Cougars. Both games are schedule to the air on the Pac-12 Network.
