EUGENE, Ore. – Despite playing one of its better games offensively on the road, the University of Utah men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting #17/18 Oregon team inside Matthew Knight Arena and fell 80-62 Sunday night.
The Utes (14-11, 5-8 Pac-12) played well in the opening minutes of the first half, but hot hands from Payton Pritchard (4-of-5) and Will Richardson (3-of-3) saw them trail 29-18 at the 7:47 media break. Four-straight free throws from
Timmy Allen out of the break cut the Oregon lead down to 29-22 before a trio of three balls from UO set the Utes back 40-24 and forced a timeout with 4:28 left in the first frame.
A short 6-2 run by Utah near the end of the half got it within 42-30 of the Ducks but a last second shot from Pritchard saw Utah head into the locker room trailing 44-30. Despite Oregon (20-6, 9-4 Pac-12) hitting 10-of-15 from deep at the half, the 30 points by Utah was the highest total at halftime on the road so far this season.
The Utes were able to get within 55-47 of Oregon behind some solid shooting (7-of-11) early on in the second half. That coupled with Oregon going just 1-of-5 from three, compared to how they were shooting in the first stanza, allowed Utah to get within single-digits. However, an 8-1 run by the Ducks out of the break saw Utah's deficit grow back to double-digits, 63-48, with 7:26 remaining to play.
As well as the Utes started the second half, the 3-point barrage from Oregon in the first 20 minutes of action was too much to overcome. Utah struggled to find the bottom of the basket after
Mikael Jantunen's bucket with 11:38 left to play and didn't see another field goal until
Rylan Jones hit a trey with 3:41 left in the game.
Jones led the Utes Sunday night offensively with 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from deep while
Branden Carlson and
Timmy Allen added 10 points apiece. Allen also had six assists on the night while Carlson had seven boards.

Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
Opening Statement…
"I thought we were ready to go. It was a seven point game there about eight minutes left in the first half. It was a nice little flow. We were playing hard enough and then boom, three straight threes and it went from 7 to 16 just like that. Somethings we got a fix but that's an elite team that hasn't lost a game at home so we're going to just keep fighting and I am proud of how hard we played. I thought second-half defensively was as good of a half as we played even though we had some breakdowns, but I am pretty proud of our effort."
