OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team returns home and looks to continue protecting the Jon M. Huntsman Center, where it is 10-1 on the season, as it welcomes in UCLA for a late 8:30 p.m. (MT) tip on FS1 in another edition of
#Pac12AfterDark.
Aaron Goldsmith will have the call in the 22nd all-time meeting between the Utes and Bruins while former UCLA head coach Steve Lavin serves as the analyst.
GAME DAY PROMOTIONS
Thursday's game against UCLA will be a RED OUT and fans are encouraged to wear red at the game. The first 200 students will also receive red t-shirts. In addition, the first 100 students will get a chance to win free AirPods via Chuck-A-Ball.
Sunday's game against USC will continue the usual theme of Ute Proud Sundays. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a t-shirt while the first 100 students will again get an opportunity to win AirPods via Chuck-A-Ball.
SCOUTING THE BRUINS
Utah will look to avoid a four-game sweep by the LA Schools for the first time since joining the Pac-12 this week when the Bruins and Trojans come to town. The 2017-18 season saw the Utes avoid the sweep by defeating UCLA at home 84-78 in the first game of the series at home.
UCLA enters the game Thursday 15-11 overall and 8-5 in Pac-12 action while riding a three-game winning-streak with wins coming at Arizona followed by a sweep of the Washington schools this past week. Chris Smith is averaging 2.3 points higher in league play, posting 15.6 points per game in conference games while averaging 6.7 rebounds and shooting a cool .500 clip. In addition, he is also shooting an .828 clip from the free-throw line with 13 steals.
In the previous meeting between Utah and UCLA, Tyger Campbell went off for 22 points and eight assists while Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 18 points and four steals with Jalen Hill adding 14 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting. The Bruins went 17-of-22 from the charity stripe to the Utes' measly 4-of-5 at the line last time in Los Angeles.
In the last five games for the Bruins (4-1), Smith (14.6ppg, 6.2rpg) isn't the only player averaging in double figures. Point man Tyger Campbell is averaging 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists during that stretch while Cody Riley is posting 11.4 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game with an efficient .649 shooting clip.
Unlike the Utes, UCLA is 3-4 in true road games this season and 3-3 in league games on the road. The Bruins are averaging 3.3 points less on the road and outscored by an average of 6.0 points away from home. Smith is averaging 13.6 points and 5.9 rebounds away from Pauley Pavilion while Jake Kyman is averaging 10.3 points with a .537 shooting percentage.
CARLSON TRENDING UP
As the season has progressed, freshman
Branden Carlson has begun to show signs of his comfortability at the Division I level after returning from his two-year mission this past April. The 7-footer is averaging 10.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in his last seven games, which is 4.0 points higher than his average of 6.9 points, and have posted double-digit points in five of those seven games.
During that seven stretch, Carlson has also recorded 15 of his 31 total blocks this year while shooting 62-percent from the field.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite playing one of its better games on the road offensively, Utah ran into a hot-handed Oregon team that shot 12-of-24 from beyond the arc Sunday night behind a 4-for-9 effort from player of the year candidate Payton Pritchard and 4-for-4 night from Will Richardson. Pritchard and Richardson combined for 43 of Oregon's 80 points – including 30 points the first half, which totaled the Utah team score.
Rylan Jones broke out of his shooting slump in Matthew Knight Arena, scoring 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting – including a 4-for-8 night from 3-point range.
Timmy Allen added 10 points and six assists while
Branden Carlson reached double-figures for the third time in four games with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Utah will be playing its league-leading fourth game on Sunday this season when it faces off against USC for a 4 p.m. (MT) tip-off on ESPNU. The Utes look to avoid a sweep by USC this season with the lone instance where the Trojans have swept the Utes in a season coming in 2017-18.
LOOKING AHEAD
Utah will have one final opportunity to pick up a road win(s) the following week as it travels to the Bay Area for the usual end of season Wednesday/Saturday tip. First up for the Utes will be Stanford on Wednesday, Feb.26, for an 8 p.m. (MT) tip before facing the California Golden Bears on a rare leap year date at 4 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Feb. 29. Both games scheduled to air on Pac-12 Network.
