PARK CITY, Utah – Joachim Lien won his second-straight race with a victory in the men's slalom for the Utah ski team at the Utah Invitational on Sunday as the Utes took the overall team title in the meet.
Utah won with 743 points, its second-highest total this year behind the Utes 745 points in the Colorado Invitational, both which rank first and second in the RMISA record book since the current scoring rubric was implanted in 2014. It is just the fifth time that an RMISA school has scored over 700 points in that time with three of those coming by the Utes this year.
Lien leads the league with four wins this season, three which have come in slalom races. He also won yesterday's giant slalom race to sweep both men's races at the Utah Invitational.
"It was awesome," Lien said. "The weather was good and the hill looked good. The first course set was pretty turny up top and I just let it go. Executed well first run, nothing special, just solid skiing. It got pretty groovy second run and I was patient, stuck to the groove and it worked out well. Happy for back-to-back wins on home soil. Can't let anyone else beat us on Utah snow. The team is strong and looking good. We didn't win every meet last year and we heard about it, but we're looking good this year. Hopefully we can finish strong with Regionals and NCAA's remaining."
Gustav Vøllo finished seventh for his fourth top-10 finish of the year.
Addison Dvoracek was 11
th with
Tomas Birkner 12
th.
Huston Philp and
Fredrik Maurstad did not finish their first runs.
Katie Parker was the top women's finisher, placing fifth for her second top-five finish this weekend.
Sona Moravcikova finished ninth for her sixth top-10 finish of the season while
Katie Vesterstein placed 10
th, her fourth top 10 of the season.
Eirin Engeset did not finish her second run.
"Another great day at Park City. Super proud of the whole team," head alpine coach
JJ Johnson said. "Their whole effort over this last week and a half and how we've come together, I couldn't be more proud of the group. The team performed again. It was super challenging – it's max vertical for the men that's legal and the guys came out again ready to play. The second run set was super straight and tight, which breaks down a little more and is harder to ski when you reverse the 30, and they all did a good job. Joachim is just on fire right now skiing super solid. Addison just keeps building his consistency in slalom and every day he can get two good runs is awesome. Tomas just showed how athletic he was in both runs, it wasn't his A game but skied unbelievably athletic and fought really hard. Gustav fighting from the back and being able to get seventh was awesome. The women, Katie P was our top skier today, just so focused and looks like she's having fun on her skis. When you look like you are having fun, you're going to be fast. Sona and Katie V both skied awesome first run and looked like they held a little back second run, but awesome to see them fight and I know they have more in them, which is fun."
"It was an incredible weekend," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "It's fun to win our home meet in front of a big crowd. Great to see all of our fans and supporters out here. There is so much support here for skiing. Just an incredible day and another win this year, now we have to do it again next weekend at Regionals. Two more to go. Every meet is different and anything can happen, all we can do is make sure we're in it and we know we can win it, and we'll see what happens. It's fun to ski fast."
Action continues in Park City with an RMISA slalom qualifier, which does not count towards any team scoring and is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season. Races will begin at 9:15 a.m.
