PARK CITY, Utah – Joachim Lien won the men's slalom on Monday as the Utah ski team hosted an RMISA qualifying race, his third-straight victory to win all three men's alpine races hosted by the Utes this year.
RMISA qualifier races do not count towards any team scoring but are used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships.
Lien was fourth after the first run and laid down the fastest second run for the win. He leads the league with five total race wins and has won four of the five slalom races held this season. Lien also leads the league with six podium finishes.
Addison Dvoracek placed ninth for his sixth top-10 finish of the season and
Tomas Birkner was 10
th, his fifth top 10 of the year.
Huston Philp finished 16
th and
Gustav Vøllo and
Fredrik Maurstad did not finish their second runs.
"That was fun, scoring a hat trick at home," Lien said. "As I said before this meet, we're not going to let anyone beat us on Utah snow. I'm super excited and we have to keep it rolling into regionals and NCAA's. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going. I was a little too conservative first run but second run I charged from the start. Happy with the result and happy about the weekend."
Eirin Engeset finished on the podium for the fourth time this season to lead the women, tying for third. She is tied for second in the league in podium finishes.
Katie Vesterstein finished fifth for her second top-five finish of the season.
Katie Parker did not finish her second run and
Sona Moravcikova did not race.
"Extremely proud of the entire team," assistant alpine coach
Mary Joyce said. "Last night JJ [Johnson, head alpine coach] and I told them how proud we were of them for being awesome teammates and athletes, and that didn't go unnoticed and they continue to show us every single day that's why they're proud to be Utes. They're good teammates, they work hard and they ski fast. It was definitely great to watch Joachim come back from behind and win that second run to win overall. It's a really strong field and to win three races is pretty incredible. The women skied better than they have all season these three days and they worked so hard and deserve every bit of it. Just a solid weekend from the whole crew."
"Everyone just keeps skiing so well," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "Joachim was incredible, getting three wins on the home hill is unbelievable. It's hard to do but he's skiing great and his confidence is great to see. This was all about getting some good results for qualification and several skiers did well and got those results. JJ and Mary did an incredible job organizing the meet along with Barb [Yamada, Team Mom], the races went off perfect and it's been an incredible three days."
The teams travel to Montana this weekend for the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional, with action beginning on Thursday with an RMISA giant slalom qualifier.
