SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team travels to Montana for the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional this weekend. Action begins on Thursday, Feb. 27, with an RMISA giant slalom qualifier before moving into the meet on Friday with the giant slalom and 5/10-km freestyle races. The championship continues on Saturday, Feb. 29, with the slalom and 15/20-km classic races.
Thursday's RMISA giant slalom qualifier does not count towards any team scoring but is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships.
Utah won the RMISA regular-season championship after winning all three meets this year. Utah has scored over 700 points in every meet, including setting an RMISA record under the current scoring rubric (implemented in 2014) with 745 points in the Colorado Invitational while the Utes 743 points scored at the Utah Invite ranks second in league history. An RMISA school has scored over 700 points in a meet just five times since 2014, with three of those coming by the Utes this year.
Alpine is coming off a strong weekend in Park City, led by three wins in men's alpine from
Joachim Lien. He leads the RMISA with five wins this year, including four in the slalom, and also has a league-high six podium finishes.
Addison Dvoracek also has giant slalom win this year and is tied for second in the league with four podium finishes.
Tomas Birkner has five top-10 finishes this season and Gustav Vøello has finished in the top 10 four times.
Fredrik Maurstad's best finish this year is ninth in the giant slalom at the Colorado Invite and
Huston Philp is a 2018 All-American in the giant slalom with 10 career top-10 finishes.
In women's alpine,
Roni Remme returns to the Utes after competing on the World Cup circuit, her best finish of the year in college is second in the slalom at Colorado. She was recently seventh in alpine combined at Crans Montana.
Eirin Engeset is tied for second in the RMISA with four podium finishes this season.
Katie Parker was named RMISA Skier of the Week for the Utah Invitational after earning a pair of top-five finishes, including her first career podium finish.
Sona Moravcikova is among the league leaders with six top-10 finishes on the year, including two top five finishes.
Katie Vesterstein has two top five and five top-10 finishes this year.
The Utes will be a little shorthanded on the Nordic side with
Samuel Hendry,
Luke Jager,
Logan Diekmann and
Julia Richter all competing at the FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships in Oberwiesenthal, Germany, from Feb. 29-March 7. In women's Nordic,
Guro Jordheim has won five of the eight races this year and leads the league with seven podium finishes. She has not finished lower than fourth this year.
Leah Lange also has a win this year and is tied for second in the league with three podium finishes and five top-five finishes.
Mariah Bredal also has three podiums and five top fives on the year. Bredal and Jordheim are two of just three skiers in the RMISA to finish in the top 10 in every race.
Karianne Moe has one podium, two top fives and is tied for fourth in the league with seven top-10 finishes.
For the men,
Maximilian Bie has a classic win and is tied for third in the league with three podium finishes.
Ola Jordheim has finished in the top 10 in all but one race this year, which ranks tied for second in the league.
Noel Keeffe, who has a World Cup race under his belt and recently had strong finishes on the Super Tour in Minnesota, has two top-10 finishes this year in college skiing. Bjorn Riksaasen has three top-10 finishes on the year.
