OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team once again looks to build off a win at home and take it on the road as it opens the final road swing of the regular-season with the Stanford Cardinal this Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.
J.B. Long will have the call on the rare midweek tilt at The Farm while Don MacLean serves as the analyst with the Utes looking to sweep Stanford for the first time since joining the league. The 2019-20 campaign is just the fifth time in nine seasons that the two programs have played each other twice in league play, three of which have resulted in splits (2011-12, 2015-16, and 2016-17) and one sweep in favor of the Cardinal (2012-13).
FINNISH-ING STRONG
Freshman
Mikael Jantunen is starting to pick up his production for the Utes and playing with poise. The Helsinki, Finland, native is averaging 9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his last three games while shooting a whopping 75-percent from the floor. In his last game against USC, Jantunen scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor during the final 20 minutes of action. In addition, he is averaging 25.8 minutes in the last five games for Utah – which is the third-highest total on the team during that stretch. Through 27 games, Jantunen is shooting an amazing 70.1-percent from the field – which leads the team (min. 100 FGA).
BOMBS AWAY
Junior sharpshooter
Alfonso Plummer had a breakout two games this past weekend, averaging 17.0 points with a .500 shooting clip and 57.1-percent (8-for-14) from beyond the arc. The Fajardo, Puerto Rico, product is starting to find himself in the rotation much more as the season has progressed, averaging a little over 20 minutes of action the last three games. He opened last weekend with 16 points off the bench against UCLA before helping lead Utah past USC with a career-tying 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from downtown.
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
The Cardinal enter the week 18-9 on the year and 7-7 in league action, which places them in seventh place, while sitting at 12-4 when playing at Maples Pavilion. Their sweep of the Washington schools last weekend was just the eighth time a team swept on the road this season.
Stanford was swept by the Arizona schools during its last homestand with the last home victory coming against No. 11/12-ranked Oregon 70-60. Its other two losses have come at the hands of Oregon State (68-63) and Kansas (72-56).
Oscar da Silva continues to pace the Cardinal, averaging 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals to go along with 24 blocks – which is second most on the team. His .589 shooting percentage is also best on the team and second on the team at the free-throw line (.773). Tyrell Terry is second on the squad, scoring 15.0 points per game while averaging 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals. Spencer Jones is third on the team in scoring, and averages 9.2 points and 3.4 rebounds with a team-high 72 treys (.434).
Stanford is just 2-3 in its last five games with four different players are averaging in double figures. Terry paces the pack averaging 14.2 points with da Silva behind him at 13.8 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. Bryce Willis is third on the squad in those five games, averaging 11.3 points while Jaiden Delaire is averaging 10.2 points to round things out.
LAST TIME OUT
Alfonso Plummer jump-started the Utah offense with a career-tying 18 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range while
Timmy Allen posted his sixth double-double of the year with 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Utes came away with the 79-65 win over USC at home.
Utah's defense was able turn Stanford over 15 times for a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers. In turn, the Utes were not selfish either – assisting on 70-percet (19-of-27) of its made shots on Sunday night. Utah also saw the proverbial lid on the basket finally removed and connected on 10-of-21 shots from downtown – five of which came by way of Plummer. The last time the Utes hit 10 triples in game was back on Jan. 16 when it nailed 10 at Arizona.
