BOZEMAN, Mont. – Joachim Lien won the men's giant slalom and four total skiers earned podium finishes as the Utah ski team holds a six-point lead after the first day of the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional.
The Utes were the top-scoring team in three of the four races on the day, amassing 329 points, leading Denver (323) and Colorado (322.5).
Lien has won his league-leading sixth race of the season and his second giant slalom race of the year. He has won four of the last five races. Gustav Voello placed sixth for his sixth top-10 finish of the season.
Addison Dvoracek placed 14
th for Utah's third points scorer while
Fredrik Maurstad was 19
th,
Huston Philp 23
rd and
Tomas Birkner 27
th. Philp ran the third-fastest second run of the day while Maurstad ran the sixth-fastest second run.
"It was a difficult race on soft conditions," Lien said. "Running first in the first run was definitely an advantage, and I'm happy that I managed to take care of that opportunity. Second run was a bumpy ride and I'm happy with how I let it go. Got some good reports from my teammates and overall I am happy with the day. It's definitely a confidence boost going into NCAA's, which is on the same hill."
Women's alpine was paced by a 10
th-place run from
Katie Parker, her sixth top-10 finish of the season.
Eirin Engeset finished 12
th with
Sona Moravcikova 18
th,
Katie Vesterstein 23
rd and
Roni Remme 26
th.
"Both the men and women put a ton of effort into our home race last weekend and with some of the conditions they haven't pushed as hard as they could have, but we're still on pace to be peaking in a week and a half," head alpine coach
JJ Johnson said. "The snow was better today than yesterday, which was challenging for everyone. Joachim is skiing with so much confidence and energy and he just keeps executing in any conditions. Gustav just keeps showing speed. He made a huge mistake but still had a good finish which shows how fast he is. Addison was in the mix the first run and finished solid, we have been trying some new things with his skiing to see what works. It's fun to see Huston with some solid runs, he's been struggling with some back issues. Eirin is about in the spot that she wants to be, she just didn't have the kind of runs she has had all year.
Katie Parker just keeps doing her thing, she had two good runs and has been showing so much consistency lately. Sona had her first run on snow since we have been here since she's been dealing with some injury, the second run she charged a lot more and that was what more in line with how she can ski."
For the Nordic team,
Guro Jordheim finished second for her league-leading eighth podium finish of the year.
Leah Lange finished third for her fourth podium of the year, which is tied for second in the league.
Mariah Bredal finished seventh and along with Jordheim is the only skier in the league to finish in the top 10 in every race this year.
Karianne Moe placed eighth and has finished in the top 10 in all but one race this year.
"It was a wonderful day out,"
Guro Jordheim said. "I got promising splits from Miles and Fredrik through the race until I ended up on my butt in the last corner, down the hill, outside the barring. Stocked to make it in 2nd. I am super happy for Leah and Ola for getting 3rd and the rest of the team performing strong and stable. Awesome skis and cheering again, and a memorable way for me and Leah ending our last rmisa on the podium together.
In men's Nordic,
Ola Jordheim earned his first podium finish of the year with a third-place finish. He has three career podiums.
Maximilian Bie finished fourth for his fourth top-five finish of the season.
Bjørn Riksaasen placed sixth, for his best finish of the year and fourth top 10.
Noel Keeffe finished 17
th.
"With half the men's team in Germany there was more responsibility on the rest of us to keep racing fast,"
Ola Jordheim said. "I've been feeling better the last week and I am very happy that it showed in the racing. First podium of the year, and no better timing than the Regional championship!"
"It was a great day for Nordic to kick off Regionals," head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "Our women continued their strong season claiming four of the top eight spots. Guro and Leah lead the charge with two podiums. Just incredible skiing from them! The conditions warmed a bit for the men but they adapted quite well to the softening conditions. Ola, Max and Bjørn were all skiing as well as I have seen them ski all season. We are looking forward to the classic races tomorrow!"
"Another excellent day for the Utes!" Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "The conditions at Cross Cut Ranch were perfect with sunny skies and temperatures in the 30's. This is the same course that we will use at the NCAA Championship and it was fun for everyone to have great races today. Missing three men and Julia [Richter] for World Championships was tough but our team is so strong that we can still be on top. Will be very tough to select the team for NCAA's. We are looking forward to a fun classical mass start race tomorrow."
Racing concludes on Saturday with the slalom and 15-km and 20-km classic mass start races.
