OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team will wrap up its final road game of the regular-season on a rare Leap Year game this Saturday, Feb. 29, against the California Golden Bears at 4 p.m. (MT) inside Haas Pavilion.
Ted Robinson will have the play-by-play duties on the Pac-12 Network broadcast between the Utes and Golden Bears while Don MacLean serves as the analyst in the 33rd meeting between the two programs all-time.
ROAD TIDBITS
Heading into its ninth season in the Pac-12, Utah is 3-5 all-time in its final road game of the regular-season. Additionally, the Utes are 7-8 since 2011-12 in their final road series of the regular-season with the 2016-17 (1-0) and 2018-19 (0-1) seasons being single games against Colorado. Utah will also be looking to avoid a sweep by on the road by the Bay Area teams for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
California is coming into Saturday's game with a hot hand after toppling #21/20 Colorado at home, 76-62, behind a career-high 26 points from Matt Bradley (5-of-7 3FGM). Like the Utah/Stanford game, 3-point shooting and a 21-5 edge in points off turnovers for Cal propelled them to Thursday night's victory. In addition, Cal went 17-of-22 from the line compared to Colorado's 6-of-9 shooting at the line.
Bradley is playing a tad bit better for the Golden Bears in his last five games, averaging 18.4 points and 5.4 rebounds with a .431 shooting clip. Paris Austin is also playing well in his last five games, averaging 11.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Bradley has also been great from beyond the arc for Cal, knocking down 15-of-30 in the last five games and 59 on the season.
Overall, Bradley is averaging 17.8 points and 5.1 rebounds with a .447 shooting clip while Kareem South averages 9.1 points and 2.3 rebounds. Grand Anticevich paces the team on the glass, averaging 5.5 rebounds with his 8.1 points per game. Austin leads the team with just 64 assists and 24 steals while averaging 8.6 points on the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a less than ideal start to the game at Stanford this past Wednesday, the Utah men's basketball team showed resilience and battled to make it a 63-60 game with 3:01 left to go. However, the Utes weren't able to connect on their chances to tie the game up from beyond the arc and fell to the Cardinal 70-62 after free throws for Stanford put the game away.
Freshman
Branden Carlson again had the Cardinal's number on defense, blocking Stanford eight times around the rim and tied his season-high from just 20 days ago in Salt Lake City against the Cardinal.
Jaxon Brenchley was critical in the rally for Utah, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting – including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Utah's biggest downfall was allowing Stanford to turn its 17 turnovers into a 23-7 edge in points off turnovers at the end of the night – 15 of those 23 points coming in the first half off 12 turnovers.
UP NEXT
Utah returns home for its final game of the regular-season as it plays host to Colorado on Saturday, March 7, at 12:30 p.m. (MT) on senior day. The Runnin' Utes basketball program will also be honoring senior
Marc Reininger pre-game. Ted Robinson (PxP) and Matt Muehlebach (Analyst) will have the call inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center on the Pac-12 Network broadcast as Utah looks to finish the season 12-2 at home on the year.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Utes get a short turnaround with the Pac-12 Tournament beginning on Wednesday, March 11, inside T-Mobile Arena. Seeding is still up in the air as Utah looks to finish the regular-season a strong note against the Buffs.
