SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah men's basketball freshman
Branden Carlson had his best game yet in his young Utes career, posting 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks to lead the Runnin' Utes past #RV/RV Stanford in a thrilling overtime game 64-56 Thursday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Hanging on to a 44-43 lead with 5:45 left to go, Utah (13-9, 4-6 Pac-12) saw Stanford mount its comeback and eventually gave up the lead twice. First coming at the 5:17 mark when Oscar da Silva had a put-back making it 45-44. However, a 3-pointer from
Riley Battin two possession later gave the Utes the 47-45 advantage before Tyrell Terry went down the court and drilled a 3-pointer with 55 ticks left to play and put the Cardinal on top 50-49.
Then, with 3.9 seconds left to play Allen was able to make a play at the rim and draw a foul. After missing the front end, the Mesa, Ariz., hit the second to tie the game up 50-50 to send the game into overtime after Terry just missed a deep shot at the buzzer.
Once the extra period started, it was all Utah. Battin struck first for the Utes after swiping the ball from da Silva. Up 54-53, Battin found a wide-open
Jaxon Brenchley on the near corner for the 57-53 edge. The next possession ultimately sealed the game when Brenchley drove to the rack and found Carlson for the two-handed slam, 59-53 before free throws iced the game away for Utah.
The Runnin' Utes had a solid start back at home and took and early 15-9 lead at the first media break (14:18) before going on a 9-0 run that forced Stanford (16-6, 5-4 Pac-12) to call a timeout. A quick 7-2 response by the Cardinal saw the Utes call a timeout of their own at the 7:40 mark.
Mikael Jantunen finally put an end to the scoring drought for Utah when he hit the second of two free throws at the 4:01 mark. Stanford took advantage of that six-minute scoring lull and went on a 9-3 run, cutting the Utah lead down to 27-20 heading into the 3:24 media break.
Thankfully, the great start to the game allowed Utah to weather yet another shooting slump and scoring lull to take a 28-22 lead into the break against the visiting Cardinal. That shooting slump saw the Utes go 0-for-11 with nine of its 10 turnovers in the half occurring in the final 10:01.
Timmy Allen tied Carlson for the game-high with 15 points, four rebounds and four steals behind 9-of-12 shooting from the line. Battin joined Carlson when a double-double of his own, posting 11 points and 10 boards with four assists.

Coach K's Opening Statement....
"I thought we lost our lead without a doubt because of a lot of one-on-one basketball. They had some really good players that were making some plays and I thought collectively when it wasn't the one-on-one setting, we were as good as we've been all year guarding a really good team. I thought we did a really good job on da Silva and we out rebounded them. The first half was the 10 turnovers and I thought that was a big key. Stanford leads our conference in creating turnovers and so there is a little bit to be said about that. I really wanted both of those free throws with three seconds to go so we didn't have to go to overtime, especially when you are looking at Rylan with an injury. But, we got a lot of stops and we held them to six points in overtime, which I thought was great and that was even with the corner three late and it was a good effort for us defensively."
Coach K on Brenchley playing more with Both sitting out…
"I'm watching games all around the country and we can't be a short rotation team and we already are. But, we've got to gain some confidence and those guys have to gain some confidence. I think Alfonso came in and hit a big shot for us and we are going to need some guys in the backcourt to step up and hit some threes. You know Jaxon is on that same learning curve that I think Brandon is with things not being such a grind, and he's physical. If you look at Jaxon, I think he doesn't look like a freshman. I looked at him at shoot around when we were talking with the Pac-12 folks and he doesn't have a freshman body. He's a strong kid, and I think confidence away and schemes away it's huge. He and Brandon changed our number from 12 to 13 in the locker room and I thought they had an integral part of hitting big shots when they needed too."
Freshman Guard #5 Jaxon Brenchley
On playing in the starting rotation...
"It's been a change for me. Through my coaches and teammates trusting me, it's been good though. I'm just trying to play with confidence and play the right way. We won tonight and that was the goal, whether I'm starting or not."
On Branden Carlson's big night defensively...
"That was a big deal. All the coaches are encouraging him to do that. He was huge for us. Stanford had some hesitation at the rim and when they did shoot, he sent it back. It was a huge game and I'm proud of him."
Freshman Center #35 Branden Carlson
On what changed tonight schematically to be so successful…
"I had a lot of trust in my teammates and they were there for me. If I missed a block, they would help me make sure my guy didn't get the rebound so I would be more comfortable enough to go and contest more of those shots."
