SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
Cal comes to Salt Lake City after narrowly falling to No. 24/24 Colorado 71-65 on the road and remained winless on the road this season (0-6) despite shooting above 50-percent on the night. The Golden Bears have had a similar profile to the Utes in conference play, sweeping the Washington schools at home, losses to the LA schools on the road and split the Oregon teams at home while falling to the Buffs on the road.
Matt Bradley paces Cal through 22 games, averaging 17.8 points and 5.0 rebounds with a .454 shooting clip. The 6-4 guard also leads the squad with 43 triples on the season while knocking down 95-of-112 free throws (.848). Kareem South is nearly averaging in double-figures for Cal, checking in at 9.5 points per game. The logjam of players continue with Grand Anticevich averaging 8.2 points with a team-best 5.6 rebound per game. Senior Paris Austin is right behind Anticevich with 8.1 points per game and a team-high 19 steals. Andre Kelley rounds out the list with a team-high .528 shooting clip (min. 100 FGA) and 7.4 points average.
In conference action, Bradley is averaging 18.3 points and 5.6 rebounds with a .457 shooting clip. Austin picked up a bit in Pac-12 play for the Golden Bears, averaging 10.8 points with a .418 shooting percentage. In addition, Bradley has scored in the double-figures range in all but one game this season for the Golden Bears.
SWAT LAKE CITY
Freshman
Branden Carlson had his best game yet as a Ute this past Thursday, swatting away eight Stanford shots – which tied Jason Washburn for the third-most blocks in a single-game. Washburn did it against Oregon State on Feb. 4, 2012, in Utah's first season in the Pac-12.
Through games on Feb. 6, Carlson became the 24th player to register eight-plus blocks in a single-game this season in Division I. According to
Basketball-Reference, there's only been 49 players (including Carlson) that have recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks in a single-game dating back to the 2010-11 season. Of those 49, six accomplished the feat in 2019-20 with three coming from a Power-5 Conference (Onyeka Okongwu, USC; Mike Watkins, Penn State;
Branden Carlson, Utah) per
Basketball-Reference.
DIME A DOZEN
With his seven assists against #RV/RV Stanford, freshman
Rylan Jones now has 101 assists and joins just seven other freshman in Division I this season to have 100-plus assists.

LAST TIME OUT
A breakout game from freshman center
Branden Carlson saw him post his first-career double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and a whopping eight blocks as Utah fended off #RV/RV Stanford in overtime 64-56. The Utes also got help from
Riley Battin, who also picked up his first-career double-double scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds and four assists. Meanwhile,
Timmy Allen added 15 points, four rebounds and four steals for the Utes.
Rylan Jones had an off night offensively, but helped team in other ways by dishing out seven assists.
The Utes had a great start to the game, taking an early 24-11 lead that helped them weather an extending shooting slump to take the 28-22 lead at halftime. Despite Stanford's best attempt to take the lead, twice, a clutch free by Allen and yeoman's work by Carlson on defense forced the game into overtime.
Once in the extra period, it was all Utah with huge baskets coming from
Jaxon Brenchley and Carlson before Allen put the game away at the free-throw line.
UP NEXT
Utah hits the road once more, this time to the Pacific Northwest where it'll play the Oregon schools. First up will be the Beavers on Thursday, Feb. 13, at on Pac-12 Network before heading 45 minutes south on Sunday, Feb. 16, to play the Ducks on FS1. Since joining the league in 2011-12, Utah has only walked away with a sweep of the Oregon schools once (2017-18) and have been swept by the Oregon schools four times while splitting the road swing to Eugene/Corvallis once.
LOOKING AHEAD
With three home games remaining, Utah returns from the Pacific Northwest to entertain UCLA (Feb. 20) for an 8:30 p.m. (MT) tip-off on FS1 before welcoming USC (Feb. 23) for a 4 p.m. showdown on ESPNU. Utah will then hit the road one last time before hosting Colorado (March 7) to wrap up the regular-season.
