OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team returns home to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center one last time to close out the 2019-20 regular-season this Saturday, March 7, when Colorado comes to town for a 12:30 p.m. (MT) tip-off.
Â
The Runnin' Utes program will honor senior
Marc Reininger prior to the game at 12:10 p.m. (MT) while Ted Robinson (PxP) and Matt Muehlebach (Analyst) call the game on Pac-12 Network one last time before teams head to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament (March 11-14).
Â
SCOUTING THE BUFFS
Colorado travels to Salt Lake City 21-9 overall on the year and 10-7 in Pac-12 play with a 4-6 mark when playing on the road. Saturday's game will be critical for the Buffs with it tied with USC for the fourth and final "BYE" in the conference tournament while Stanford and Arizona have two games remaining sitting at 9-7. However, CU is currently on a three-game skid after the Bay Area teams swept both Mountain squads last weekend.
Â
McKinley Wright IV still paces the Buffs by a small margin, averaging 14.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists with a .452 shooting clip. Tyler Bey is right on his tails, averaging 13.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals to go along with a deadly 52-percent shooting percentage. D'Shawn Schwartz rounds out the list of double-digit scorers with 10.4 points per game with a team-high 51 made 3-pointers.
Â
The last time these two teams squared off, the Utes ran into a hot-shooting Colorado team in Boulder that shot 59.4-percent (38-of-64) from the field. The Buffs saw five players reach double-figures while Evan Battey (17pts, 10rebs) and Bey (11pts, 12rebs) each recording double-doubles. Conversely, Utah had one of its worst games offensively with no player scoring more than eight points (
Riley Battin) while no player had more than three field goals. The Utes were nearly doubled up on the glass, pulling down just 24 rebounds to CU's 42. The 91-52 loss was the second-largest losing margin since joining the Pac-12.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Despite 26 points from
Timmy Allen, career-high 23 points from
Alfonso Plummer and 19 points from
Both Gach, the Utah men's basketball team couldn't find off California last Saturday at Haas Pavilion and fell to the Golden Bears in overtime 86-79. Despite taking a 28-24 lead into the break, Cal came out firing in the second frame and took over the lead.
Â
It took a valiant effort by the Utes, playing without their floor general
Rylan Jones, to cut the lead down in the final 3:01 with a critical 3-pointer from Plummer followed by the game-tying free throws from Gach with two seconds remaining in regulation. However, the momentum was still in Cal's favor and saw it get a jump on Utah in the extra period before securing the win at home. The Golden Bears had five players in double-figures to Utah's three along with a 39-33 edge in rebounding – including 18 offensive boards that led to a 20-6 edge in second-chance points.
Â
UP NEXT
With the end of the regular-season, Utah will get a short turnaround before heading off to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament – which will begin on Wednesday, March 11, inside T-Mobile Arena. As of right now, the Utes will play either the 1 p.m. (MT) game [No. 8 vs. No. 9] or the 7 p.m. (MT) game [No. 7 vs. No. 10].
