MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Utah baseball team evened the series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers with a 6-3 win at U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday night.
Zack Moeller got the offense going with four RBI after going 3-4 at the plate. Two of his three hits were doubles.
Riley Pierce got the start and had a strong 6.0 innings giving up zero runs and had a career high nine strikeouts.
The Utes got going in the second inning with a double from
Vinny Zavolta. Moeller stepped up behind him and knocked him in with a single. In the fourth inning, the same combination added another run after a Zavolta walk and Moeller double.
Fast forward to the eighth inning and a Moeller double was key to the inning as well. After
Trey Clarkson got a single and Zavolta walked, Moeller stepped up and smacked his second double to score two more runs and the Utes went up 4-0 in the eighth.
After Minnesota scored two runs in the bottom half of the eighth, Utah bounced back with two more runs in the ninth. This time, it was
Jayden Kiernan that got the big double to score the two runs to give Utah a 6-2 lead.
Dustyn Schramm came in for Pierce and pitched the final three innings to preserve the win and move the Utes to 5-7 on the season. Schramm added three more strikeouts to give Utah 12 for the game after Pierce's nine.
Zavolta finished the game going 2-3 at the plate and scored three of the team's six runs.
Utah and Minnesota will play their third and final game of the series at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, March 8 at 12 p.m. MT.
