SALT LAKE CITY – The United States Marine Corp (USMC) and AVCA have announced the University of Utah volleyball team has earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 season.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale.
It was a record-breaking year in the volleyball world in the classroom as 1,313 teams were honored, topping last year's record by nearly 200 teams.
This award caps a great year on and off the court for the Utes.
The team earned a perfect single-year APR score for the seventh consecutive year and perfect multi-year score for a fourth straight season. The recognition from the NCAA came for posting a multi-year APR in the top 10 percent nationally of all volleyball teams.
Volleyball also set a team record with a 3.666 GPA for the spring semester. They had 17 student-athletes on the honor roll (3.0 or above) and nine student-athletes make the Deans List (3.5 or above).
On the court, Utah finished third in the Pac-12 and made the program's fourth Sweet 16. The Utes also had four players honored as All-Americans with
Dani Drews being named to the First Team and
Kenzie Koerber and
Berkeley Oblad both being named to the Second Team.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres was named an AVCA All-American honorable mention in her first year as starting setter.
