SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah alpine team got its season officially underway last weekend and now it's the Nordic's side to begin racing for the 2021 season.
They will do so at Soldier Hollow this Sunday, January 17 when they race 5/10K Freestyle and Monday, January 18 when they race 15/20K Classic.
"Everyone is very excited to get the official season started," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "We had a very good preseason and most of our athletes have competed in some races already, but a few of them have only done training races and no official race. This will be different, and it's a great way to start the season by doing it at home."
There are three returners on the women's team including
Julia Richter as well as four returners on the men's side including
Samuel Hendry. There are also four newcomers on the women's side with three freshmen and one transfer.
Due to the pandemic, alpine and Nordic skiers will not be in similar locations until the NCAA Ski Championships, which are set to be hosted by New Hampshire after the original host Middlebury could no longer host with its conference canceling winter sports. Most alpine meets will not see the men and women competing on the same day and most Nordic races are slated to be interval starts.
This past year, the Utes were in the middle of defending their 2019 National Championship when the NCAA Championship was stopped after the second day of competition due to the pandemic.
With the world a different place, training through the summer and fall have been different, but the team is ready to go.
"The team has been doing really well," Landstedt said. "The women's team has been doing very, very strong and the men's side is a little thinner, but our top guys are getting there and getting better and better, so it will be interesting to see how they do this weekend."
