PARK CITY, Utah – Despite the second race of the men's giant slalom being postponed due to heavy snow today, the University of Utah men's alpine team extended the Utes' lead in the RMISA Invitational with a strong showing in the first race that produced four top-15 finishers.
Utah closed out the RMISA Invitational winning by 117.5 points after scoring 63.5 points today in the Giant Slalom. The Utes have won every meet they have skied in so far this year and currently lead in the RMISA Invitational hosted by Westminster.
"I think it is obviously a great start to our year and it really speaks to the team we have this year," director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "We have new recruits coming in that are really stepping up on both Nordic and Alpine. It is a little different with scoring every race, but I still believe we have a very high caliber team and will be in the mix at NCAAs. Anything can happen there and we have a couple more meets to go."
Freshman
Wilhelm Normannseth was Utah's top finisher today, placing eighth in a field of 31 skiers, scoring 23 points for the Utes. It was Normannseth's third top-10 finish this season after placing seventh in the Giant Slalom at the Denver Invite and third in the slalom at the Colorado Invite.
Two places behind the newcomer was senior
Joachim Lien in 10
th, who added 21 points to Utah's total for the day in his first race of the season. Lien posted the fifth-fastest second run of the day, finishing in 1:00.92 in the first run and 1:00.80 in the second.
"It is an individual sport, but that is only for one minute that you are skiing while the other 23 hours and 59 minutes of the day you are a team," Lien said. "We couldn't do this without one another. We are in the gym every day and charging toward the championship. We won everything last year except regionals and then the NCAA Championship got cancelled, so we're trying to win everything this year. The team spirit is high and we are looking forward to what is ahead of us."
Lien has been racing in Europe and this was his first race with the Utes and it felt good to be racing on their home course.
"It's fun," Lien said about racing in Park City. "It's the best snow on earth is what they call it and it's true. Today, I wish it was a little harder for sure, but it's so fun competing at home and having the donors other supporters out here with us. It's for sure the best race of the year. It's also really fun having our donors here, so they can see what they're putting effort into and we can give something back. It's very cool during these times."
Senior
Tomas Birkner came through the finish line in 11
th place today in Utah's giant slalom race. It was also Birkner's third top-15 finish of the season after placing 10
th in the giant slalom at the Denver Invite and 14
th in the slalom at the Colorado Invite.
Rounding out Utah's top-15 finishers was senior
Huston Philp who placed 15
th overall for the Utes. It was Philp's third Giant Slalom race this season and his second finish in the top-15.
Next up for the Utes will be the Nordic team wrapping up the RMISA Invitational at Westminster, Feb. 22-23 while alpine prepares for the RMISA Championship.
