SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team has a busy week in front of it as its regular season is coming to a close.
The alpine team will begin racing in the RMISA Championship on Thursday, Feb. 18 and Friday, Feb. 19 while the Nordic team has two more events it'll race in beginning Monday, Feb. 22.
"It's going to be a tough week finishing up alpine this week," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "Obviously, they've had a lot of competition since last week, and they've done really well. You hope they keep improving and have more good results this week up in Park City. Then moving into next week, we'll have four Nordic races beginning on Monday and Tuesday. You want them to build on the alpine team winning the first part of the meet and try and hold that lead to win that meet. Then we'll finish the week off with the Nordic regionals next Friday and Saturday."
The alpine team will begin this week with the giant slalom on Thursday, February 18 followed by the slalom on Friday, February 19.
Originally, the race was going to begin with the slalom, but before the RMISA Championship takes place, the final giant slalom race in the RMISA Invitational hosted by Utah has been rescheduled for Thursday morning. The race was postponed back on February 12 as conditions worsened to the point the second race was deemed unsafe, so it was postponed. The new race will not be a FIS-U or USSA race, but will count as an official RMISA race and be counted in the team standings to close out the RMISA Invitational at Utah and for NCAA qualification, MVP and official Start lists maintained by the conference.
It finishes up a busy week of racing for them as they also hosted giant slalom races last week.
"I want to give a shoutout to
JJ Johnson and
Mary Joyce," Landstedt said. "They've been doing a great job with the alpine team, and they have been working very hard in organizing these races in Park City. Not only are they competing there, but they're also working and doing a great job to help organize these races to make sure we can have safe competitions."
Early next week, the Nordic team will begin its busy week of racing. They will race in the RMISA Invitational hosted by Westminster at Soldier Hollow on Monday and Tuesday. In Monday's race, they will have a 5/10K Classic and on Tuesday they will race in the 10/15K Freestyle.
The alpine team raced in their portion of the RMISA Invitational hosted by Westminster at Snowbird back on February 8-9. They won both days putting the team in first place by 49.5 points setting the Nordic team up to secure the win.
If the Utes win the RMISA Invitational, they will have won every meet they've competed in so far this season with on the RMISA Championship and NCAA Championship to go.
To finish off the busy week, the Nordic team will race in their portion of the RMISA Championship on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27.
Next up for Utah will be the NCAA Championship in New Hampshire from March 10-13.
