PARK CITY – After battling some tough weather last week in Park City, the Utah ski team had a perfect day of racing the giant slalom to begin the RMISA Championship.
The Utes finished the day in fourth place, but are only 19 points out of first place. The team was led by
Huston Philp, who had his highest finish of the year in third place.
"It felt really good today actually," Philp said. "The whole team came out firing with a positive attitude and we all did really well. The snow and the weather held up really nicely.
On his second run, Philp had the third fastest time in the field, catapulting him up to the third position.
"My mindset was to go for it and give it all I've got," Philp said. "I knew this was one of the last races this season, so I wanted to finish strong and it turned out to be a strong run."
Gustav Vøllo and
Wilhelm Normannseth also finished in the top-10 coming in eighth and 10
th.
Bjorn Brudevoll finished in 26
th and
Joachim Lien came in 34
th.
On the women's side, Utah had four racers in the top 11.
Katie Parker finished in seventh place followed by Sona Morcavikova in ninth,
Claire Timmermann in 10
th and
Katie Vesterstein in 11
th.
"It was way better conditions than we had last week," Parker said. "I got to run bib 1 this morning, so that was nice. Second run was a little bumpy, but honestly pretty good. The girls overall did really well. We're stepping it up and peaking at the right time for NCAA's I think."
Before the RMISA Championship started, the giant slalom race that was postponed at last week's RMISA Invitational hosted by Utah was finished on the men's side and they faired very well.
Vøllo came in second, Lein came in fifth, and Normannseth came in sixth.
Utah was already assured of winning the meet, but the strong finish helped Utah to a 146.5 point win.
The alpine team will be back on the mountain tomorrow racing in the slalom for the RMISA Championship at Park City.
