SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah soccer team did its best to hang in there with #3 UCLA Sunday afternoon but ultimately fell to the Bruins 2-0 at Ute Field.
The Utes, who were on the defensive for a majority of the match, took five shots with three coming on goal while UCLA had nine of its 12 shots on goal – eight of which came in the second half.
Utah (2-5-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) was on the offensive early on in the first half, getting a corner kick just 2:24 into the match but wasn't able to convert.
Brooklyn James, who had two of Utah's three shots on goal, ripped one between the pipes in the 24' but UCLA's Lauren Brzykcy was there for the save. James had another good look on goal in the 30' but the Bruin keeper was again there for the save.
After Utah made a handful of substitutions, UCLA (8-0-0, 5-0-0) took advantage and went on the offensive against the new line – putting one on goal to take the 1-0 lead in the 33' on the foot of Reilyn Turner. The Bruins threatened right after the restart and then again in the 40' and 45', but
Chelsea Peterson was there for the save each times to keep Utah within 1-0 of UCLA at the break.
The second frame was a bit physical and chippy on both sides as
Taliana Kaufusi drew a yellow card in the 57'. After a foul on UCLA moments later,
Ali Schinko weaved her way past the Bruin defense and booted one at the five hole but got denied by Brzykcy.
UCLA knocked on the door once again in the 61' but Peterson was there to make the save on Turner's shot. However, Turner found the back of the net a couple minutes later for the brace in the 63'. Utah had a set piece opportunity in the 64' but saw its service cleared. UCLA had two more shots on goal, but Peterson was once again able to make the saves for Utah.
