Runnin' Utes Add Hunter Erickson for 2023-24 Campaign

The Runnin’ Utes signed Hunter Erickson to an NLI on Wednesday further solidifying the backcourt.
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head men's basketball coach Craig Smith announced the signing of Hunter Erickson, further solidifying his backcourt for the 2023-24 season.

"We are thrilled to welcome Hunter to the Runnin' Utes family," said Smith of the addition. "Hunter is a basketball junkie and loves to compete. He's a dynamic playmaker that competes on both ends of the court. He's a winner and will make us better."

The 6-3 guard is currently at Salt Lake Community College, last year's NJCAA National Runner-Up, after spending his first two season at BYU (2020-22). Erickson stuffed the stat sheet in the season-opener for SLCC on Nov. 4, scoring 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.Â

Erickson started his career down south, playing eight games his freshman year (2020-21) in a reserve role before seeing action in 19 games as a sophomore (2021-22). The Provo, Utah, native made his collegiate debut against Westminster and also scored his first-career basket that game. He scored a career-high 10 points against the Griffins his sophomore year on 4-of-7 shooting and helped the Cougars reach the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Tournament last season.

During his prep career, Erickson helped lead Timpview High School to four-straight regional championships.
As a senior, he averaged 22.6 points while leading the Thunderbirds to a 17-7 overall record and 8-2 in Region 7 play. For his efforts, Erickson was named 5A First-Team All-State by the Deseret News, second-team all-state by USA Today and All-Valley by the Daily Herald.

His junior season was just as successful, averaging 22.0 points with 57 made 3-pointers and led THS to an overall record of 18-6 and 12-2 in Region 7 action. The Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune both named him first-team all-state selections while the Daily Herald named him the All-Valley Offensive Player of the Year.

Smith and the Runnin' Utes welcome in CSU Bakersfield this Friday, Nov. 11, for a 5 p.m. (MT) tilt inside the Jon M. Huntsman in their second game of the season.
