SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team resumes Pac-12 play this Thursday, Dec. 29, when it opens the Bay Area swing with a visit to the California Golden Bears as the Runnin' Utes look to open conference play 3-0 for the first time since 2014-15 (4-0).
Guy Haberman will have the call while former UCLA All-American Don MacLean serves as the analyst on the Pac-12 Networks broadcast as Utah looks to make it four-straight against Cal and three-straight for head coach
Craig Smith against the Golden Bears.
LOOKING FOR SOME FUN IN THE BAY
As Utah opens up its first road swing of the year, the Utes will look sweep the Bay Area teams for the second-straight year in the row this upcoming week – a feat that has not been done since joining the Pac-12 in 2011-12. However, a sweep against the Bay Area teams would give Utah its first back-to-back road swing sweeps, dating back to last season, for the first time since 2018-19 when it picked up a sweep of the California teams. In total, Utah has only swept the Bay Area road trip twice in nine tries since joining the Pac-12.
MADSEN'S MADNESS
With non-conference play all wrapped up, Utah guard
Gabe Madsen has made more 3-point shots so far on the season than he has two-point opportunities. The Rochester, Minn., native has hit 38-of-91 (.418) from 3-point range through 13 games while only converting on 18-of-51 (.353) opportunities from inside the arc.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah had its opportunities to pick up a second win over an AP ranked opponent when it faced off against then-No. 20/19 TCU at Vivint Arena despite being plagued with 19 turnovers.
Gabe Madsen played a huge role in keeping the Runnin' Utes within striking distance all night thanks to his second career-high scoring game of the season with 26 points on 7-of-15 from 3-point range.
Meanwhile,
Branden Carlson moved into third all-time in blocks after recording five blocks against TCU. The South Jordan native passed Jason Washburn (2009-13, 155) and Mitch Smith (1985-89, 157) to take sole possession of the third spot on the career blocks list. Carlson finished with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 night from the field to go along with nine rebounds and three assists.
UP NEXT
The Runnin 'Utes will close out the Bay Area road swing with the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. (MT) before returning home to ring in the new year. Roxy Bernstein and Don MacLean will have the call on that Pac-12 Networks broadcast.
LOOKING AHEAD
Utah opens up its full slate of Pac-12 play at home the following week against Oregon State first on Thursday, Jan. 5, before welcoming in the Ducks of Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 7. Both contests in Salt Lake City are scheduled to air on Pac-12 Networks.
