PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Utah men's basketball team looks to pick up just its third sweep of the Bay Area teams on the road since joining the Pac-12 this Saturday, Dec. 31, when it battles Stanford inside Maples Pavilion.
Roxy Bernstein will have the call in the 40th meeting all-time between the Runnin' Utes and Cardinal while Don MacLean serves as the analyst in the Pac-12 Networks broadcast.
DEFENSE HOLDS STRONG IN PAC-12 ACTION
Despite a tough night on the offensive end, Utah's defense came through holding the Golden Bears to just a .167 shooting clip from beyond the arc and held them without a field-goal in the final 8:28 minutes of the game. The 43 points from Cal was the fewest points allowed in a Pac-12 game for Utah since holding Cal to the same total on Feb. 10, 2018. It was also the fewest points allowed in a conference road game since holding Oregon State to 37 points on Feb. 19, 2015.
The Runnin' Utes defense has held all three Pac-12 opponents so far under 20-percent shooting from 3-point range.
vs. Arizona (.143)
at Washington State (.133)
at California (.167)
LAST TIME OUT
Defense travels as the saying goes and Utah did just that, holding Cal to just .341 from the field and .167 from 3-point range as it opened the full conference slate with a 58-43 win against the Golden Bears. Utah had a double-digit lead in the first half, but quickly saw it drop to just 33-31 early on in the second half as Cal made its resurgence. However, the Utes settled in and clamped down on defense to convert eight California turnovers into 17 points in the second frame alone.
UP NEXT
The Runnin' Utes return home for their first home-series in Pac-12 play as they welcome in the Oregon schools. Utah first welcomes in Oregon State on Thursday, Jan. 5, before hosting the Ducks of Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 7, for its Dark Mode game. Both contests are scheduled to air on Pac-12 Networks.
LOOKING AHEAD
Utah will hit the road once again after hosting the Oregon schools head coach
Craig Smith goes through his first road swing against both LA programs this season. The Utes only played USC on the road as part of its early December game in Smith's first year at the helm. Utah will first open up against #11/8 UCLA on Thursday, Jan. 12, before battling USC on Saturday, Jan. 14.
