LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH AS RUNNIN' UTES CONCLUDE 2021-22 SEASON AT PAC-12 TOURNAMENT
The Utah men's basketball team saw its season come to a close with its 82-70 loss to Washington in the Pac-12 Tournament.
Â
LAS VEGAS – A late rally was not quite enough Wednesday night inside T-Mobile Arena as the Utah men's basketball team saw its season come to a close after falling to Washington 82-70 in the opening round of the Pac-12 Tournament.
Â
Like the other match-ups between the Runnin' Utes and Huskies, it was filled with excitement as both teams traded baskets without any stoppage until the 13:20 media break where Utah (11-20) led 11-9 thanks to a huge two-handed jam from
Branden Carlson on the dump off pass from
Rollie Worster.
Â
With the game tied at 19-19 after the jumper from
Lazar Stefanovic (9:12), UW went on a short 5-0 spurt before another bucket from Stefanovic brought the Utes within 24-21 at the under-eight break (7:08). Cole Bajema pushed UW's lead back up to 27-23 before
Gabe Madsen drilled a corner three to put the Utes on top, 28-27. Washington (17-14) regained the lead shortly thereafter and did just enough to hold the narrow 40-37 lead heading into locker room.
Â
Utah started the second frame with a 7-4 start and tied things up at 44-44 before Jamal Bey sank a 3-pointer to put the Dawgs ahead at the 15:37 mark. The game then turned on the Runnin' Utes at that point as Washington put on a 19-4 run thanks to a stretch where Utah committed seven turnovers in nine offensive possessions to go down 63-48 at the 9:30 mark.
Â
The double-digit lead for UW never dropped into the single-digits despite Utah cutting the lead down to 10 on three different occasions before closing the game out and securing the 3-0 sweep over the Utes this season.
Â
Marco Anthony finished the night with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting for Utah. Carlson had an efficient night, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. Madsen had 12 points on 4-of-9 from 3-point range while Worster was just shy of his career-high in rebounds with eight boards and six assists.
Jaxon Brenchley was solid for the Utes off the bench, scoring eight points on 4-of-5 from the line with four boards and two assists.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
Utah is now 0-2 all-time as the #11 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament ... the Utes are now 2-1 against Washington in the Pac-12 Tournament … the #11-seed is now 2-10 all-time in the Pac-12 Tournament … 16 turnovers doomed the Utes once again with UW turning it into a 21-2 advantage in points off turnovers … Utah's .482 clip (27-of-56) is the highest field-goal percentage in any loss this year … both losses this season where Utah shot above 45% came against Washington … the 14 points for Carlson is the most for the junior in the four Pac-12 Tournament games he's played in.
