SAN FRANCISCO –
Branden Carlson of the Utah men's basketball team was named to the Pac-12 Preseason Media All-Conference Team for the second-consecutive year the league announced on Tuesday.
Â
Carlson enters his fifth season with the Runnin' Utes program and had one of his best seasons in 2022-23 averaging 16.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 with a.496 shooting clip. Meanwhile, his 63 blocks were tops in the Pac-12 and 27th overall in the NCAA while his 2.03 blocks per game was good for second in the league and 22nd in the country. His 63 denials last season also tied him with Jakob Poeltl for most blocks in a single-season at Utah. The South Jordan, Utah, native also closed out last season with a 22-game double-digit scoring streak – including three-straight double-doubles.
Â
Heading into the 2023-24 campaign, Carlson is tied for 24th on the all-time scoring list at Utah (1,279) while his 187 career blocks is third all-time. He needs just 19 more blocks to move into second and 33 to take command as the program leader over David Foster (219). In addition, he's 18 offensive rebounds and 20 defensive rebounds shy of cracking the top-10 in both of those categories. Sitting at 110 career games, he'll also have an opportunity to surpass Andre Miller (1995-99) and Drew Hanson (1994-98) for most career games played as a Ute – which sits at 134.
Â
Carlson closed out the season earning first-team honors on the All-Pac-12, Associated Press and NABC All-District teams in 2022-23. The 7-0 center lived up to his preseason honors last season and will hope to back it up once again this season when the Runnin' Utes take the stage on Nov. 6 against Eastern Washington in their season-opener at 7:30 p.m. (MT) on Pac-12 Networks.
