SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
The Utes now stand at 6-7-6 in 2023 and 2-5-3 in the Pac-12, while the Wildcats are 5-8-5 overall and 2-6-2 in conference competition.
"This was a painful result to take in what was a must-win situation for us today," said head coach Hideki Nakada. "Even though I thought we created enough chances to score and win the game, we did come out extremely flat in the first half and we ultimately paid the price for it. It was important for us to come out and play with high intensity and urgency, but unfortunately it took us until giving up an own goal late in the first half to turn it on."
The teams started the match by exchanging scoring opportunities, with a
Katie O'Kane shot being saved in the 14th minute, followed by a
Kasey Wardle save on Arizona's first on-target effort soon after. The Utes sent in four more shots over the following 20 minutes, but were unable to find a goal.
The Wildcats ended up being the ones to break the scoreless deadlock in the 37th minute, when a Nyota Katembo cross deflected off a Utah defender and into the net and the visitors made that lead stand up for the rest of the first half.
The second half began with the Utes pressing for an equalizer and they almost had one in the 50th minute, when
Lilliah Blum sent in a shot from the left side of the box, only for Arizona's Hope Hisey to stop that try and a shot by
Kennedy Schoennauer on the rebound. O'Kane put an effort on frame in the 53rd minute from just outside the six-yard box and
Kelly Bullock tried her luck a minute later, only for Hisey to be on the spot in both instances.
The Utes tested Hisey three more times over the last half-hour, including a short-range shot from
Taliana Kaufusi in the 86th minute that was denied and followed immediately by a
Katie O'Kane effort on the rebound, which was blocked. Unfortunately for the home team, none of these chances resulted in the tying tally before the clock ran out.
"In the second half, we created numerous quality opportunities and we were inches away from putting one away," said Nakada, "but it wasn't meant to be."
Utah ended the match with a 20-6 advantage in shots and five Utes collected multiple shots on goal, led by Bullock's total of five. Courtney Brown and O'Kane each posted four, while Kaufusi and Blum were each credited with three. Wardle picked up three saves in goal.
