MORAGA, Calif. – The Utah men's basketball team held off a late push by Saint Mary's to secure the 78-71 road victory Monday evening inside University Credit Union Pavilion and handed the Gaels just their fourth home loss since 2021-22.
The first 10 minutes of play was a game of runs with Utah jumping out early with a 6-1 lead before Saint Mary's answered with a couple short spurts. The Gaels first tied things up at 6-6 before a 7-0 run saw them go ahead 15-12 heading into the 11:02 media break.
Down 20-15, Utah (4-2) got hot behind the 3-point lined and drained 5-of-6 from the beyond the arc to take a 30-23 edge over the Gaels – which forced a timeout by the home team. However, Saint Mary's hunkered down and slowly cut into the Utah led before tying things up at 38 apiece at the half.
Aidan Matheny kept the Gaels (3-4) in the first-half against the hot-shooting Utes, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Both teams shot well from the field in the first 20 minutes of action with Utah shooting .536 from the floor while Saint Mary's shot .484.
Utah jumped out early in the second-half and led 50-42 at the 11:47 media break, but the Gaels answered with a 6-0 run to get within 50-48 of Utah. However, the game slowed down for both teams from that point on. The Runnin' Utes saw their lead extend back to double-digits, 62-52, despite going 6:26 minutes between field-goals with Utah going on a 12-4 run from the free-throw line.
Rollie Worster would then score 10 of the next 12 points for Utah as the Gaels mounted their final push against the Utes. However, time was not on the home team's side as Utah held on for the victory. Utah finished the second half scoring 21 of its 40 points from the free throw line – knocking down 23-of-31 for the game.
Worster tied with
Gabe Madsen for team-high 17 points and added eight rebounds. Fellow sharpshooter
Cole Bajema added 14 points of his own – including a 6-for-9 night from the charity stripe.
