SALT LAKE CITY – The #RV/RV Utah men's basketball team pulled away late against Utah Valley for its fifth-straight victory after prevailing 76-62 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday afternoon.
The Utes drew first blood against the visiting Wolverines for the early 4-0 lead but Utah Valley answered with an 8-0 run. They would narrowly hang onto that lead by the midway point as Utah slowly chipped away as it got into rhythm offensively after
Gabe Madsen followed up the jam by
Keba Keita with a 3-pointer to tie things up (19-19) heading into the media break.
With 10:57 on the game clock,
Deivon Smith checked into the game and entered after the media timeout to make his Runnin' Ute Debut after the recent court ruling decision to allow all two-time transfer players awaiting a waiver or appeals to play.
Utah (8-2) tied things up once again at 26-26 out of the 7:04 media timeout after Keita connected on an and-1. After a pair of free throws from UVU's Caleb Stone-Carrawell to give the Wolverines a 28-26 edge, Utah rallied with a 10-0 run to take its first lead since the opening tip, 36-28, after
Branden Carlson nailed his second triple of the game before heading into the locker room with the 38-32 lead.
The Runnin' Utes jumped out early in the second half, pushing its lead to 13 (54-41) with 13:55 to go after Madsen sandwiched a two-handed jam from Keita with a triple and a baseline jumper. However, Utah Valley (6-5, 1-1 WAC) didn't back down and reeled off an 11-5 run to get within 59-52 by the 9:10 mark before Madsen and Carlson brought Utah's lead back up to double-digits 64-52.
UVU continued to fight and clawed at the lead to get it down to 67-62 with 2:43 left to play but it was all Utah after that as the Runnin' Utes finished the game with a 9-0 run while holding the Wolverines to 0-for-4 from the field with two blocks in those final minutes.
Carlson finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks – including a 3-for-4 afternoon beyond the arc. Madsen finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds and a career-tying four assists.
