SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah catcher and infielder
Davis Cop was named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team, the league announced on Wednesday. Cop and the Utes sit just over a week away from first pitch of the 2023 season, tipping off a four-game series at San Francisco on Friday, February 17 at 2 p.m. MT.
Â
Cop is coming off a 2022 season in which he was named Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention. Injuries in front of him last season necessitated Cop taking over the starting catcher role in March after having played in just one game to that point. He finished the year with 35 starts behind the dish—including catching
Matthew Sox's complete game win at USC on April 22. The Valencia, California, product tallied a .354 batting average with seven doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI.
Â
He was especially clutch during the Pac-12 Conference slate, batting a team-best .367. He ranked third on the team in slugging percentage (.478) in Pac-12 games. All told, Cop logged 14 multi-hit games on the season and had a season-long hitting streak of eight games.
