The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's a quick break from Pac-12 Conference play for the Utah baseball team, as the Utes welcome Northern Colorado to Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday for a doubleheader. Game one is set for a 2 p.m. MT first pitch, with the second game to follow at 6 p.m.

Pac-12 Network will carry the nightcap of the doubleheader, with Thad Anderson (PxP) and former longtime Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg (analyst) on the microphone. Bill Riley will also call Game 2 on ESPN 700 Radio.
The doubleheader was announced on Monday due to inclement weather in the Wasatch Front forecast for Wednesday; previously the Utes and Bears were scheduled to play just a single game on Tuesday and one more contest on Wednesday afternoon.
Utah is looking to build on the momentum of Sunday's series finale victory over Arizona State. Trailing 6-0 after four innings, the Utes countered with 11 unanswered runs to take the game by an 11-6 score. The turning point came during a four-run seventh inning as Utah leveled the game on Kaden Carpenter's sac fly to the warning track in right field. Then in the eighth, a five spot for the home club put the Utes in front for good.
Lefty Bryson Van Sickle (2-1) gave Utah five shutout innings out of the bullpen on Sunday, striking out four Sun Devils and scattering four hits in his outing to earn the win. Zac McCleve then came on for the ninth in a non-save situation and shut the door.
Utah hosted UNC for a quick two-game series this same week last year. An eight-run second inning set the tone for a dominant 18-2 win in the opener. It was led by three Utah home runs (two for TJ Clarkson including a grand slam). Three Utes had multi-RBI performances, with Clarkson logging six. Micah Ashman earned the start in that game and Bransen Kuehl was credited a save—though Kuehl entered with a sizeable lead, he earned the save due to his effective pitching over the final three innings.
It was a walk-off win for Utah in last year's series finale vs. UNC, taking an 8-7 ballgame. Up and down the lineup there were five multi-hit performances and third baseman Chase Anderson contributed four RBI.
Although the Utes fell short of reaching the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament, the relatively young club showed signs of promise for the future. Utah (26) had a nine-win improvement from the previous season, set Pac-12 era program records in seven offensive categories and had the program's first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner in first baseman Alex Baeza.
