SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's
Cameron Gurney was 3-for-4 and was just a triple away from the cycle, as six of the Utes' 13 hits went for extra bases in a 13-10 victory over California on Saturday at Smith's Ballpark. The win forces a series rubber game on Sunday at noon MT.
Momentum swings came often throughout the seventh inning as both teams scored five runs and batted around during the frame. In the end the Utes found themselves ahead by an 11-10 score before Gurney homered in the eighth and
Dakota Duffalo launched a sacrifice fly for the eventual 13-10 final.
Randon Hostert was the lucky winner on the mound, coming on to induce an inning-ending ground out in the top of the seventh before Utah took the lead for good in the home half. From there,
Micah Ashman earned a two-inning save—his sixth of the season; it's the most by a Ute since Trenton Stoltz had eight in 2018 and most by a lefty since Dylan Drachler's nine in the Pac-12 Championship season of 2016.
Led by Gurney, four Utes had multi-hit days at the plate in
Jayden Kiernan (2-for-5),
Matt Flaharty (2-for-3) and
Bruer Webster (2-for-4).
TJ Clarkson homered for the ninth time this season and Gurney's big fly was his fourth. Flaharty, Gurney and
Kai Roberts all doubled in the win and
Bruer Webster sped around the bases in the fourth inning for his first triple as a Ute.
Kiernan has hit safely in seven straight games played and reached base safely in 15 straight appearances, both the longest active streaks on the team.
Cal got on the board with a run in the third inning before Utah took a 3-1 lead in the home half. Flaharty led off with a walk, then after Webster laid down a bunt Flaharty used heads-up base running to get all the way to third. He scored when Roberts laid down a safety squeeze, then Clarkson homered onto the berm in right-center field for the 3-1 Utah lead.
The squads swapped runs in the fourth with the Utes putting up a three-spot for a 6-3 lead. Two walks and a sac bunt put men in scoring position for Utah, setting up Webster to send a laser down the right field line and into the corner. It scored
Kaden Carpenter and
Karson Bodily, then Webster himself came home on a Roberts sac fly.
The Golden Bears had the game's next seven runs with one apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, then five more in the seventh for a sudden 10-6 lead for the visitors.
Five Utah hits in the bottom of the seventh would put the home club up for good. Gurney got the scoring started with a double to plate Kiernan, then
Davis Cop stepped up and singled to score Gurney.
Now with the score 10-8, Flaharty stepped into the box with runners in scoring position. He skyed the 2-2 pitch to left center field, dropping on the warning track and plenty deep for a double to score Bodily and Cop to level the score at 10. Two batters later when the lineup turned over, Roberts doubled on the first pitch to score Flaharty and give Utah the 11-10 upper hand.
Ashman worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, setting the stage for Gurney to lead off the home half with a solo shot. Bodily would later score on a sac fly by Duffalo.
Cal brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after a walk and single, but the Utes would come away with the win after interference was called on a double play attempt.
Utah starting pitcher
Merit Jones had five strikeouts in his 4.1-inning outing.
