SALT LAKE CITY – A four-run top of the fifth inning turned the tables as the Utah baseball team fell to California on Sunday, 11-8, in the teams' rubber game at Smith's Ballpark. The Utes will be off on Monday then return to game action on Tuesday for a trip down to BYU; first pitch is set for 6 p.m. MT at Miller Park.
Kai Roberts,
Jayden Kiernan,
Davis Cop and
Karson Bodily each had a pair of hits in the loss. Roberts drove in a pair of runs and Duffalo scored twice, while
Bruer Webster worked three walks to tie the most by a Utah hitter this season.
Utah was on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the opening inning.
Cameron Gurney hit a laser off the pitcher's glove that trickled back to shortstop for an RBI groundout, then Cop put a single through the left side plating
TJ Clarkson for the early 2-0 lead.
The Golden Bears grabbed a 4-2 lead with a three-spot in the second inning then another run in the third, before Utah brought it all-square at four on a two-run single for Roberts in the home half of the fourth.
Cal would put up four more runs in the top of the fifth; unfortunately for Utah it ended up putting the visitors in front for the rest of the ballgame. But the Utes did claw back within a pair of runs on two different occasions.
Matt Flaharty and Webster each drove in a run in the sixth inning to pull to 8-6, then in the seventh a single for Bodily brought Kiernan home for a 9-7 score.
Despite the Bears adding two more runs in the eighth, Utah still had chances in the home half of the inning and got one back on Clarkson's double that beat the shift down the left field line to bring in Webster. But that would be all for Utah in the eighth inning, and Cal was able to retire the Utes in the ninth to wrap up the contest.
Jaden Harris received the loss for the Utes.
