Lopez earns award after 3-0 week, including complete-game win over No. 5 Stanford
SAN FRANCISCO – For the fifth time in 2023, a member of the No. 19 University of Utah softball team was honored with one of the Pac-12's weekly awards and this time the honoree was Mariah Lopez, who earned the title of Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
Lopez was a central figure in Utah's sweep of No. 5 Stanford and her overall numbers for the week included a 0.89 ERA, a 3-0 record and 29 strikeouts across 23 2/3 innings. In her first outing of the week, she threw 6 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run and picked up a win over BYU, then followed that with 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief for another triumph against Weber State.
In Utah's series opener against the Cardinal, Lopez tossed a complete game while permitting no earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts in a 4-1 Utah win. The Arizona native capped off her week with another solid start, holding the Cardinal to two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts on Sunday.
Lopez is the first Utah pitcher to earn this title since Miranda Viramontes was named pitcher of the week in 2017. This is just second time the Utes have had players take home each of the Pac-12's weekly awards over the course of a season, as Ellessa Bonstrom has been named player of the week twice and Abby Dayton has two freshman of the week awards to her credit. Utah's five total weekly selections matches a program-best set in 2017.
