LOS ANGELES –
Bruer Webster doubled for Utah to lead off the eighth inning and bring the tying run to the plate, but Webster was stranded at third and the Utes went down in order in the ninth as the club fell to No. 23 UCLA, 5-3, on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The teams will return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday for the middle game of the three-game set, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. MT.
Jayden Kiernan had two hits for Utah and drove in a run, while
Davis Cop and Webster each had one RBI as well. It marked the seventh straight game that Cop recorded a hit and 13
th game in a row that he reached base safely. Kiernan has reached base in 12 consecutive games played.
UCLA jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after three innings, posting a pair of runs in the Bruins' first at bat then adding a three-spot in the third inning.
In the fourth Utah began to claw back, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Dakota Duffalo led off the inning with a laser single into left field, later scoring on Cop's base hit up the middle. Then with Cop on second base, Kiernan laced a single into center field allowing Cop to hustle from second base and slide into home safely, dodging a tag from catcher Darius Perry. The call at the plate went to replay review on a UCLA challenge, but Cop was ruled safe and the score remained 5-2.
The following inning, the Utes closed within two on an RBI groundout from Webster. It scored
Landon Frei, who reached to lead off the inning when a pop up into shallow right field dropped in and put Frei on second base.
Randon Hostert and the Utah defense kept the UCLA offense mostly quiet down the stretch of the game, retiring nine Bruins in a row before a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth. Hostert dealt the final five innings out of the bullpen, holding the Bruins to just three hits and a walk and striking out four.
