TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 15 University of Utah softball team claimed the first-ever Pac-12 Softball Tournament Championship on Sunday evening at Hillenbrand Stadium, downing the No. 2 UCLA Bruins 7-4 to capture the program's first Pac-12 Championship since the Utes joined the conference in 2012.
Overall, this is the Utes' 10th conference tournament championship and their first since they won the Mountain West Conference Tournament in 2006. It also clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, Utah' s 17th foray into the national postseason.
"It's a great day to be a Ute!" said head coach
Amy Hogue. "For all those who believed in this group, I want to say thank you. For those who are just getting on board, welcome. This team has been doing the work it takes to win championships. This is just the first one. They believe in themselves and in each other. I couldn't be prouder to be their coach. They deserve this trophy. They earned it. It was one of the greatest team championships I've ever been a part of. We needed everyone this week, which is why it was that much sweeter."
The Bruins were the first team to get on the scoreboard thanks to an Aaliyah Jordan home run in the first inning and, after a
Karlie Davison solo shot cut that deficit in half, the Bruins added another run on a wild pitch in the third to move in front, 3-1.
Utah's lineup started to find its stroke in the fourth, when a pair of singles brought up
Kaylah Nelsen, who ripped a double down the left field line to plate both baserunners and even the score. Four batters later,
Shelbi Ortiz poked an RBI single into left and the Utes had their first lead of the night.
The Bruins immediately tied the game in their half of the fourth and the contest stayed even until the sixth. One of the reasons the score remained level was because of a spectacular diving catch by
Abby Dayton in center for the first out of the fifth.
In the sixth,
Ellessa Bonstrom reached on a one-out single and
Hailee White then hit a rope into right-center that chased Bonstrom home with the go-ahead run. Two batters later, pinch-hitter
Halle Morris fired a missile over the centerfield fence and the Utes could claim a 7-4 advantage.
The Bruins quickly threatened that difference, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but
Mariah Lopez got Jordan to fly out to right to end the threat. Lopez then retired the side in order in the seventh and the Utes commenced the celebration of their first Pac-12 title.
Utah's all-tournament selections from the event include
Mariah Lopez, who was named the most outstanding player,
Ellessa Bonstrom,
Sophie Jacquez and
Julia Jimenez.
