SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team will take its foreign tour this summer to Spain (July 25 – Aug. 4) and compete in four exhibition games with stops in Barcelona, San Sebastián and Madrid.
"We are excited to announce that our team will be heading to Spain this summer!" Utah head coach
Craig Smith said. "We cannot thank Mark Harlan, our administration and our donors enough for making this trip possible. This will allow us to accelerate our development and team chemistry on the court thanks to the ability to have 10 practices leading up to the trip, as well as play four games in Spain. It's a great opportunity for us to not only bond as a team but also sharpen our skills."
This will serve as the third foreign tour for the Runnin' Utes since joining the Pac-12 with previous trips to Brazil (2012) and Spain/France (2017).
"In addition to the on-court benefits, this trip allows us to grow as people and as a team," Smith noted. "We will have the chance to immerse ourselves in a new culture and gain a different perspective – which will help us become more well-rounded individuals and better teammates."
Utah will depart from Salt Lake City the night of Tuesday, July 25, and arrive in Barcelona on July 26 to start its trip. The Utes will play two games during the three-day stretch in Barcelona while also immersing themselves in the Catalonia culture.
The Utes will then depart Barcelona to spend four days in the coastal city of San Sebastián with one exhibition game slated during their time in the Bay of Biscay. While in Basque Country, the team will have opportunities to explore the historic port city and will either visit nearby Biarritz, a small seaside town in southwestern France, or Bilbao – a port city to the west of San Sebastián and home to one of four Guggenheim Museums in the world.
Utah will then spend its last four days in Madrid (July 31 – Aug. 4) where it'll tour both capital city and royal palace. The team will then either visit the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas – the largest bullfighting ring in Spain – or tour Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of La Liga's Real Madrid.
While in Madrid, the Runnin' Utes will play their final exhibition game before returning stateside with a couple weeks to spare before the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
"The college experience is all about the relationships you make and the experiences you gain that last a lifetime," said Smith. "This trip will be a memory that lasts a lifetime for everyone involved. We are so grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to get started!"
