NEW ORLEANS – Utah cross country and track & field's
Charlee Linton was named the USTFCCCA Mountain Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year after a historic season on the Hill.
Â
This is the first regional award for both Linton and the Women of Utah since the awards began. It is also the first time someone from Utah or Colorado have won this award from the mountain region since joining the Pac-12.
Â
In just her second track & field season as an assistant coach on the distance side, the Women of Utah saw an unprecedented year on the oval finishing in a tie for 15th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 16 points – both of which were new program bests. Utah also finished the 2022-23 campaign at
No. 9 in the final USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings – its best finish ever.
Â
In addition, the Women of Utah cracked the top-25 poll for the first time since 1982 in week #4 and eventually earned their highest ranking of No. 14 in Week Nos. 6-7 and then again in week No. 10 before closing out the year at No. 15.
Coming off an All-American indoor season,
Emily Venters and
Simone Plourde cemented themselves into the Utah history books by becoming the program's first Pac-12 Champions. Venters became Utah's first champion when she won the 10000m race before Plourde claimed the 1500m crown the very next day.
Â
The pair then further etched themselves into the history books when they each took home a pair of All-America honors. Venters garnered first-team accolades in the 10000m after taking national runner-up honors before her and Plourde took home first-team honors in the 5000m race with Venters finishing in third and Plourde in seventh. Plourde also garnered second-team honors in the 1500m.
Â
Earlier in the season in her first outdoor event of the year, Venters not only set the school record but also ran the sixth-fastest 10k in NCAA history when she posted a time of 31:48.35 at the Stanford Invitational. Her mark would stand as the fastest time in the NCAA the remainder of the season.
In addition to the success from Venters and Plourde, the Utes saw
Bella Williams,
Morgan Jensen and
Erin Vringer all qualify for the NCAA West Regionals. Jensen (Jr.) started her championships season taking fourth in the 10000m race at Pac-12 Championships before running a new PR at the regional meet. Williams, who won the 5000m race at a stacked Stanford Invitational, also took fourth at the league championships meet and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships after finishing 14th-overall at the west regionals. Linton also coached a freshman into the quarterfinals of the regional meet in Vringer – who just missed out on advancing to the championships with her PR run in the 1500m race.
