SALT LAKE CITY – Despite
Katie O'Kane tallying her second goal of the season, the University of Utah women's soccer team suffered a 6-1 defeat on Saturday night at the hands of the No. 1 BYU Cougars at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
This loss drops the Utes to 3-2-2 in 2023, while BYU improves to 7-0.
"BYU was simply better than us today," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "I thought we started off well and looked good in our possession early on but giving up a goal with their first shot took a lot out of us and gifting them the next two goals essentially was too much for us to come back from."
The Cougars quickly seized the initiative when Allie Fryer scored in the fourth minute on her team's first shot of the night. While the Utes tried the find an equalizer and
Taliana Kaufusi put a shot on goal at the 10:53 mark, BYU added to its lead in the 25th minute, courtesy of a score by Olivia Katoa. Seven minutes later, Rachel McCarthy put another one on the board for the visitors to make the score 3-0.
The Utes continued to fight, however, and in the 36th minute,
Kennedy Schoennauer drew a foul in the box and O'Kane was tasked with converting the penalty. The Washington native did just that, blasting a shot into the top left corner of the net to put Utah on the board.
Unfortunately for the Utes, O'Kane's score would be their only goal of the night and the Cougars got on the scoresheet three more times over the final 45 minutes to cement their victory.
"I know our team is significantly better than what we showed today," said Nakada, "so I am disappointed for our players but we will learn and move on from this and get ready for our next match."
The Cougars outshot their hosts 25-6, though Utah keeper
Kasey Wardle did set a new career-high with nine saves.
Courtney Brown's two shots were a team-high for the Utes.
The night saw Utah's fans set a new stadium attendance record, with 3,224 supporters on hand.
