FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Evelyn Vitali and
Kasey Wardle combined to stop 11 shots and
Katie O'Kane converted a penalty kick into her third goal of the season to help lead the University of Utah women's soccer team to 1-0 victory over the Colorado State Rams on Sunday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field in Fort Collins, Colo.
This triumphs boosts Utah's record to 4-2-3 and they undefeated on the road at 3-0-3 in 2023. The Rams fall to 5-2-1.
"I'm really happy for our team with today's result after going through a tough stretch in the past two weeks," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "It's been a challenge to stay healthy and we haven't had a same starting eleven once this season in nine games. We've had to ask many players to play out of their natural positions but they've all adapted really well.
"Colorado State made it difficult for us to break them down but I thought we were able to control the game much better in the second half, which allowed us to create more critical opportunities. We've learned a lot about ourselves in non-conference play and now we'll get ready for the Pac-12 opener at home on Friday."
The 11 total stops represent a season-high for the Utes and their most in a match since they denied 11 tries on goal on Sept. 24, 2021 against Stanford. While the home team owned an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, the visitors outdid their hosts in overall shots, 18-14. O'Kane led the way in that statistic with seven tries and
Kennedy Schoennauer contributed three.
There were 15 combined attempts on goal over the opening 45 minutes, but neither side could break the ice. The Rams tested Vitali twice in the opening 10 minutes, only to have her stop by shots and she added three move saves in the match's opening 25 minutes to keep the scoresheet clean. Utah's junior keeper ended the first half with a season-high six stops.
For their part, the Utah attack put five tries on frame, including two in the closing moments of the period, but none of them could find the back of the net, sending both teams to the break scoreless.
Both offenses continued pressing for the tie-breaking tally in opening 30 minutes of the second half, piling up 12 shots, only for the contest to remain scoreless. It wasn't until the 76th minute that a foul on CSU's Olivia Fout gave the Utes a shot from the penalty spot. O'Kane coolly converted and Utah had the game's first score.
For the final 14 minutes, the Utes everything that was necessary to protect their lead. Utah didn't concede a single corner kick over that stretch and Wardle scooped up three saves to preserve the victory and her team's fourth shutout of 2023.
