SALT LAKE CITY – Backed by a double-double from
Branden Carlson, the Utah men's basketball team dominated UCLA in the second-half on its way to a lop-sided 90-44 victory Thursday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The win snaps a seven-game losing streak against UCLA for the Utah, its first since defeating the Bruins 93-81 on March 9, 2019 at home. Utah's 46-point victor was its largest margin of victory against UCLA all-time as well as its largest margin of victory since joining the Pac-12. The previous largest margin of victory came against Arizona State back on Feb. 26, 2015, an 83-41 affair in SLC. The Utes also handed the Bruins their second-largest margin of defeat in program history.
Utah (12-4, 3-2 Pac-12) struck first against the Bruins and took an early 9-3 lead before UCLA tied things up with a 6-0 run. Back-to-back buckets from
Keba Keita jump-started an 8-0 run for the Utes as they held that lead for the rest of the half before heading into the locker room on top 33-23.
UCLA (6-10, 1-4 Pac-12) opened up the second frame with four-straight points to get within 33-27, but that was as close as it got after that as Utah blitzed the Bruins with an unbelievable 49-6 run that lasted 13:03 minutes despite UCLA calling three different timeouts during that stretch. The Runnin' Utes had eight different players score during that run that completely took UCLA out of the game before the buzzer rang with Utah on top 90-44.
Cole Bajema and Keita tied for a team and game-high 14 points with Bajema knocking down 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Branden Carlson picked up his first double-double of the season and 13th-career of his career Thursday night, scoring 12 points with 14 boards to go with 3 blocks. The 14 rebounds were a new career-high for Carlson.
Gabe Madsen chipped in with 11 points and five boards while
Deivon Smith added 11 points of his own while dishing out 8 assists.
Lawson Lovering was just shy of being the sixth Ute to reach double-figures, scoring 9 points on 3-of-4 shooting with 5 rebounds.
