CARLSON NAMED POW ONCE MORE
Utah's
Branden Carlson was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.5 blocks while shooting .526 from the field and .545 from 3-point range (6 3FGM) last weekend. His two performances helped lead the Utes to a 2-0 start in league play with a sweep of the Washington schools.
Â
This is the third player of the week honor for Carlson and the fourth weekly award in his career after earning a freshman player of the week back in 2019-20. This is the fifth time since joining the league that the Utes have had multiple player of the week honorees in a single-season while this marks the 16th time a Ute has been named player of week. Carlson is also just the third Runnin' Utes to earn multiple player of the week honors in the same season, joining Timmy Allen (2x, 2019-20) and Jakob Poeltl (4x, 2015-16).
Â
The South Jordan native opened the weekend with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks against Washington State as Utah hammered the Cougs in the second half for the 80-58 victory. Carlson then dominated the second-half to help Utah come back from a 15-point deficit thanks to his 27-point second-half. He would finish the game with a career-high 34 points with 7 rebounds and 7 assists – which was also a career-high.
Â
CARLSON FLEXES
After his second 30-plus point performance of the season with a 34-piece against Washington, Utah center
Branden Carlson became just the fourth Runnin' Ute since 1996-97 according to Stats Perform to have multiple 30-plus point games in a single-season and joins a legendary group of Utes. Carlson joins Keith Van Horn as the on other "center" in the group as a listed center while Andrew Bogut was listed as a forward.
Â
Branden Carlson: 2023-24 (2 games)
Sedrick Barefield: 2018-19 (2 games)
Andrew Bogut: 2004-05 (2 games)
Keith Van Horn: 1996-97 (5 games)
Â
LEAGUE OF HIS OWN
Per Stats Perform,
Branden Carlson is the only 7-footer since 1996-97 to record 30-plus points with 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Meanwhile, Carlson is just 1-of-2 listed centers since then to record the same stat line. The only other listed center to do the same since then was Adonal Foyle of Colgate vs. Bowling Green on Dec. 6, 1996, with 31 points 17 rebounds and 7 assists.
Â
STATE 48 NOT SO GREAT
Since joining the Pac-12, Utah has had a tough time on the road against the Arizona schools. The Runnin' Utes have been swept six times – including back-to-back season currently. Of the 11 times on the road against the two desert teams, Utah has only managed to split the weekend four times (2016-19, 2014-15) with the win each time coming against the Sun Devils.
Â
LAST GAME
After another sluggish latter portion to the first half, the Utah men's basketball team rebounded in the second half for the second game in a row after dropping 60 points in the second frame against Washington to complete the sweep of the Washington schools at home for the eighth time since joining the Pac-12. Utah's 15-point deficit was erased thanks to big man
Branden Carlson, who scored 27 of his career-high 34 points in the second half while also posting 7 rebounds and a career-high 7 assists. The 7-footer was dominant in the second half, scoring 19 of Utah's 28 points in the final 9:31 minutes of play.
Â
Gabe Madsen picked up his first-career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Utah's point guard duo of
Rollie Worster and
Deivon Smith were both all over the stat sheet with Worster posting 14 points on 6 rebounds with 5 assists and 2 steals while Smith had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
