SALT LAKE CITY – After a positive showing at the Texas Diving Invite, the University of Utah dive program is looking to hone their skills in the holiday season at the four-day Auburn Diving Invitational starting Wednesday, Dec. 18 in the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
The last time the divers stepped on to the boards for competition,
Holly Waxman earned a top-eight finish on three of three boards, the only Big 12 diver at the meet to accomplish such a feat.
Kathryn Grant also showed a standout performance on platform and 1m events, maneuvering into a top-ten finish for both.
"Traveling to Auburn gives us a great chance to experience new competition from outside our conference and zone," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "There are several good teams at the meet and we'll see many of these divers at NCAAs. The location and competition are a bit outside our comfort zone and it allows us to et more habituated with different situations."
Along with the Auburn Tigers, the Utes will be competing with the Florida State Seminoles, George Washington Revolutionaries and Tennessee Volunteers.
At this time last year, the divers took on the Big Al Invite in Princeton, N.J. Grant again showed out with a first-place finish in the women's platform event, while Waxman topped the leader board on the 1m. On the men's side,
Elias Petersen took victories on both the 1m and 3m boards.
Previously On the Boards
- Waxman as collected four top-three finishes so far this season on both 1m and 3m and has hit the NCAA Zones cuts a total of nine times across all three boards.
- Grant sealed her Zones appearance in stone after her tower performance in Austin scored 259.75, more than thirty points over the platform cut.
- Petersen earned a fifth-place finish in the 3m prelims competition at the Texas Diving Invite, grabbing a final score of 372.50.
- Callie Eaglestone totaled a score of 290.95 for the seventh-place spot on the 1m board. At the home-opener against UNLV, the freshman snagged two silvers.
- Jesco Helling finished the home-opener in third on 1m and second on 3m with scores of 309.15 and 352.95. The graduate student's 1m performance opened the door for a spot at Zones.
- Both Waxman and Grant have their Zones cuts on all three events.
- Three Utes have their 1m and 3m Zones cuts: Petersen, Helling and Eaglestone.
Callie Calls for Celebration
After her performance at the Texas Diving Invitational, the freshman was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. In her first career invitational, the United Kingdom native earned a place in the 1m final competition, beating out competition from Texas, Stanford, Texas A&M and TCU for a top-12 finish. Her efforts added 12 points to the women's overall score, helping push them into a second-place finish.
Elias Tops Big 12
Petersen earned the first Big 12 weekly award for the swim and dive program after the junior's showing at the home opener against UNLV. Scoring 393.15 on just three dives, the Malmo, Sweden native easily topped the 1m event and came within one point of the school record on the same event. He followed that with a second victory on 3m, earning 376.73.
