SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Utah men's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the game to the Iowa Hawkeyes in a high-scoring game Saturday night inside the Sanford Pentagon.
Utah had trouble early on from the offensive end and couldn't find the bottom of the basket until
Ezra Ausar broke the seal on his second try at the 16:16 mark to make it 7-2 in favor of the Hawkeyes at the first media break (15:41).
The Runnin' Utes (8-3) soon found their rhythm and held serve with the Hawkeyes until three-straight 3-pointers from
Mason Madsen – who made his first-career start as a Ute – on consecutive possessions. His third triple would give Utah its first lead of the game (25-24) at 8:33 and never relinquished that lead the rest of the half to take a 40-36 edge into the locker room.
Madsen had 14 points in the opening frame on 4-of-6 shooting from deep while
Lawson Lovering added 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting to help the Runnin' Utes maintain their lead at the break.
Utah got off to a hot start in the second-half, jumping out to a double-digit lead, 49-38, behind a 9-2 spurt capped off by a two-handed jam from
Miro Little.
The Hawkeyes (9-3, 1-1 Big Ten) slowly dug into Utah's lead as the half went on before tying things up at 63-63 behind a 13-6 run and then again at 65-65.
Iowa regained the lead for the first time since the first half with 10:13 left to play on a 3-pointer from Brock Harding before going up 75-71. Madsen drained his sixth 3-pointer of the night to bring the Utes within 75-74 with 7:52 left in the game.
Jake Wahlin came through with a huge put-back on a miss from Madsen to cut Iowa's lead down to 83-80, but a quick 5-0 spurt by the Hawkeyes forced Utah to call a timeout in hopes of slowing the quasi-home team's momentum with 2:55 remaining.
However, the Hawkeyes were unfazed and knocked down five of their next six free-throws to ice the game and hand Utah the 95-88 loss.
Madsen recorded a new career-high with 26 points on 6-of-11 from long-range while Lovering finished with a career-high 25 points as well on 11-of-14 shooting.
Gabe Madsen was held in check by the Iowa defense and managed 9 points on 3-of-7 shooting with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
