SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball dropped two-consecutive games at home for the first time since the end of last season after its comeback fall short Saturday night against Arizona State 85-77 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
With 6:16 remaining in the game, Utah big man
Branden Carlson became the program's all-time leader in blocks with his 220th-career denial against Bryant Selebangue to pass David Foster (219; 2006-07, 09-11). The South Jordan native tied Foster with his 219th career-block his first trip down on the defensive end to start the second half when he sent Jose Perez's floater out of bounds with ferocity.
The opening half of the game was a game of runs with both teams taking turns.
Gabe Madsen opened up the scoring and
Cole Bajema followed up on the next play to give the Utes a quick 5-0 lead. Arizona State answered with a 7-0 run of its own before Utah responded with an 11-0 spurt capped off by a lay-in from
Hunter Erickson to go up 16-7 at the 13:58 mark.
ASU didn't back down and caught fire on the offensive end, knocking down eight of its next 10 shots to retake the 28-23 lead with just 6:38 remaining.
Ben Carlson jump-started the Utah offense when he drained a 3-pointer as the Runnin' Utes took their turn to catch fire from the field, hitting seven of their next 10 to take a 42-40 edge into the break.
The Sun Devils would jump out of the gates to start the second frame against Utah behind a 13-3 run to regain a 53-45 lead that it never relinquished the rest of the game. Utah would cut ASU's double-digit lead back down to single-digits every time and got as close as 55-54 with 13:14 left to go on a nice little jumper from Madsen but wasn't able to string enough stops on the defensive end for its second-straight loss.
Carlson finished with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games on top of his two blocks. Bajema finished with 12 points while Madsen ended with 11 points of his own to go with a career-high 5 assists.
Keba Keita rounded things out with 10 points and 7 rebounds of his own.
