SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team struggled from the field on Saturday in Boulder as it fell to Colorado on the road 89-65 inside the CU Events Center.
After
Gabe Madsen broke the seal on the opening possession with an and-1, Colorado answered with a 12-0 run that included a stretch where it went 5-for-5 from the field. Utah (16-11, 7-9 Pac-12) then closed the gap with four-straight baskets heading into the 11:48 media break down 19-12.
The Buffs were rolling out of that media break and went up as much as 17 points on three separate occasion before the Runnin' Utes went on a run of their own. Utah knocked down eight of its next 11 shots in the final 5:54 of the first half fueled by 16 points from
Gabe Madsen to get within 43-34 of the Buffs at the break.
Deivon Smith came out of the gates scoring the first seven points for Utah to open the second half to get within 53-41 of CU (18-9, 9-7 Pac-12) and then a quick 6-2 brought the Utes within 57-47 with 13:49 left to go. However, Colorado caught fire from the floor and knocked down eight of its next 13 shots to balloon its lead to 80-53 over the Utes.
That deficit coupled with the shrinking time was too much overcome for the Utes as Utah fell to the Buffs on the road
Madsen finished with 18 points and 4 boards while Smith chipped in with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the Utes.

The Utes now return home for their final two home games of the 2023-24 regular-season starting on Thursday, Feb. 29, against the Stanford Cardinal before closing things out inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center with the California Golden Bears on Saturday, March 2.
