SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team bounced back against Stanford with a resounding 90-68 win Thursday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center backed by four players in double-figures – including a career-high 21 points from
Cole Bajema and a triple-double from
Deivon Smith.
With the win, Utah (17-11, 8-9 Pac-12) snaps a three-game skid against Stanford and splits the in-season series against the Cardinal. Meanwhile, Smith became just the third player in the Pac-12 since 1993-94 to record three-plus triple-doubles in a single-season. Smith joins Jason Kidd (4; 1993-94, Cal), Andre Iguodala (3; 2003-04, Arizona) and Shaquille O'Neil (3; 1991-92., LSU) as the only other player from a major conference with at least three triple-doubles in a season.
Smith is also just the second player in 2023-24 with three or more triple-doubles, joining Vonterius Woolbright from Western Carolina (4).
Utah's offense returned to form back inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead before reeling off another 8-0 run to force a Stanford (12-16, 7-11 Pac-12) timeout with 14:28 on the clock up 15-4.
Stanford would then cut the Utah lead down to 22-16 after knocking down five-straight shots. However, the Runnin' Utes answered in resounding fashion to the tune of a 19-2 run for the 41-18 edge out of the under-4 media timeout before heading into the locker room ahead 46-27.
Utah out-rebounded the Cardinal 24-14 at the half – including an 11-4 edge on the offensive glass that led to a 12-2 advantage for Utah in second-chance points.
The second half was much more contested between the two teams but Utah's offense in the first 20 minutes of action was too much to overcome. The Runnin' Utes continued to apply pressure on the Cardinal and went on an 18-7 run in the final five minutes of play to close out the game.
Bajema's career-high 21 points was fueled by a 5-for-6 effort from the 3-point line and 4-for-5 night at the line.
Lawson Lovering had a great night off the bench, scoring 17 points with 5 rebounds on a perfect 6-for-6 night from the field.
Gabe Madsen chipped in with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals on his own while Smith finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on 5-for-8 shooting.
