SALT LAKE CITY – Backed by a near triple-double from
Deivon Smith and 21 points from
Gabe Madsen, the Utah men's basketball team remained undefeated at home with a 73-68 win over Colorado Saturday afternoon inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The first half was like a heavyweight bout with both teams exchanging jabs. Utah had the largest lead of the frame early on when it took a 7-2 lead minutes into the game. Neither team could breakaway with eight ties and seven lead changes in the first 20 minutes of action.
Utah's (15-7, 6-5 Pac-12) offense was spread pretty evenly early on with four players with five or more points led by an early eight from Smith. Meanwhile,
Branden Carlson sent Eddie Lampkins Jr. shot attempt towards the Utah bench at the 16:16 mark for his 217th-career block and inched closer to becoming the program's all-time leader.
First play on the defensive end in the second half (19:04), Carlson denied an attempt by Tristan da Silva for career-block No. 218. The back-and-forth continued early on before Utah went ahead 42-37 at the 15:50 media break thanks to a rare fourth-point play from Madsen. Utah then cranked up the defense and went on a 13-4 run for the 55-42 lead after
Hunter Erickson's 3-pointer with 8:34 to go. During that run, the Utes held Colorado to just 1-for-9 from the field.
Things got testy with less then than three minutes to go when KJ Simpson scored 14-straight points for the Buffs (15-7, 6-5 Pac-12) to keep them within one or two possessions of the Utes. However, Utah was able to ice the game away down the stretch at home knocking down 7-of-11 from the foul line en route to its victory.
Smith finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists with a block and 2 steals to close out the night when Madsen led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season with 21 points and 3 steals.
Lawson Lovering nearly had a double-double in his return to the line-up with 9 points and 8 boards on 4-of-5 shooting.
