SALT LAKE CITY – Prior to the start of their 2023 campaign, the University of Utah softball team made it clear they had a single purpose in mind: to make the 1176-mile journey to Oklahoma City for what would be the program's first Women's College World Series appearance in nearly 30 years. One year after attaining that goal and picking up the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament Championship along the way,
Amy Hogue's Utes are preparing to take the first steps towards repeating those accomplishments and trying to see if they can achieve even more in 2024.
Utah will get the new season underway at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, which will be held in Clearwater, Florida at the Eddie C. Moore Complex and, for the Utes, will begin on Feb. 9 with a 1 p.m. ET (11 a.m. MT) matchup against the Army Black Knights, followed later that day by a 4 p.m. ET clash with the Missouri Tigers. On Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. ET, the Utes will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in what will be the first-ever live collegiate softball game ever broadcast on MLB Network, then Utah will meet N.C. Central at 7 p.m. ET, before concluding the tournament on Sunday by facing Iowa at 10 a.m. ET.
Feb. 9 – 11 Schedule

2023 in Review
Utah's 2023 season was full of achievements and program firsts almost too numerous to mention. In conference play, the Utes achieved their highest win total ever in the Pac-12 and their 15 victories included a sweep of No. 5 Stanford, the highest-ranked team the Utes have ever swept a series from, and three straight wins in Eugene, the first time Utah has ever completed a sweep of the Ducks.
The program saw eight of its student-athletes named all-conference and all-region, both representing new team benchmarks, as did the four All-Pac-12 First-Team picks and, in the Pac-12 tournament, those honorees helped lead the Utes past California, No. 5 Washington and No. 2 UCLA to capture the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament championship. After collecting three straight wins at NCAA Regionals, the Utes earned the right to host an NCAA Super Regional for the first time ever and vanquished San Diego State to reach their first Women's College World Series since 1994. Utah would conclude its campaign ranked as high as No. 7 in the national polls, the highest the program has ever risen in the rankings.
Among the Utes' brightest starts a year ago was pitcher
Mariah Lopez, who became the first Utah pitcher to be named an All-American since 1994 and also reached First-Team All-Pac-12 and First-Team All-Pacific Region status. Lopez racked up 23 wins and 206 strikeouts, both of which ranked in the top three in the Pac-12 and finished in the top 10 in the league in innings pitched, complete games, strikeout rate and ERA. The senior from Arizona was at her best in the postseason, winning the Pac-12 Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and collecting all five of Utah's victories in the NCAA Tournament.
Utah's returners also include all-conference performers
Aliya Belarde,
Abby Dayton,
Haley Denning,
Sophie Jacquez and
Julia Jimenez and Belarde, Denning and Jimenez all joined Lopez on the Preseason All-Pac-12 roster. Belarde earned her recognition by leading the team with a .393 batting average and tying for the conference's highest hit total. Denning will be aiming to lead the league in steals for a fourth straight season and is within striking distance of the program's all-time records for career hits, steals and runs.
Jimenez finished the year in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in doubles, total bases, RBIs and sacrifice flies while also slugging 10 homers for the second consecutive season. Dayton's exploits earned her a pair of Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards, the first Utah rookie to accomplish that since Ally Dickman in 2016, and Jacquez batted .374, Utah's third-highest clip, drove in 32 runs and made an appearance on the All-Pac-12 Tournament team.
Also back in the fold are outfielder
Shelbi Ortiz, who posted the Utes' second-highest slugging percentage in 2023 at .608, catcher
Kendall Lundberg, who owns a .308 career batting over her first two seasons, and infielder
Karlie Davison, after a freshman year in which she blasted 11 long balls, tied for the team lead. Two of the heroes from Utah's Pac-12 Championship Game triumph, infielder
Hailee White and outfielder
Kaylah Nelsen, will be among those with opportunities to contribute as well and the same can be said for catchers
Leilani Melendez,
Emily Capobianco and
Chloe Doyle and outfielder
Stella Bennett.
Along with Lopez, Utah's arsenal of arms includes senior
Sarah Ladd, who pitched to a 3.16 ERA in her first season in Salt Lake City to go with a perfect 5-0 record that included conquests of Stanford and Oregon and a save that clinched Utah's super regional triumph over SDSU. The Utes also added former All-Big West conference hurler
Raci Miranda to their staff and sophomore
Brooklyn Carreon and redshirt freshman
Taylor Jacobs will be looking to make their Utah debuts in the circle.
While Miranda joined the program via the transfer portal, Utah also has four freshman newcomers who are aiming to contribute.
Jolie Mayfield blasted 19 homers in 2022 to earn the title of 6A Player of the Year, while infielder
Shonty Passi, the No. 40 player in the 2023 class, comes to Utah after helping several of her squads reach championship status, including being part of a Team Polynesia 18U team that won the Triple Crown International Challenge in 2022. Hogue also added freshmen
Sianni Sakai, who hit .595 with nine home runs in 2022 to help her team reach the state championship game and
Reese Lee, a three-time member of the all-region roster who was ranked the No. 28 player in her recruiting class by Extra Inning Softball.
Scouting the Opposition
Three out of Utah's five opponents in Clearwater are coming off seasons sporting winning records, with Missouri, Notre Dame and Iowa combining for 105 victories.
Utah is set to face Army to kickoff the weekend. The Black Knights posted a 22-37 overall record, but also a 10-8 conference mark in 2023. Productive in the batter's box was sophomore infielder Taylor Brown, who saw action in 54 of 59 games during her inaugural year with Army and led the team in RBIs, knocking in 27 runs while scoring 29. She earned second-team all-league honors for her efforts, as did outfielder Kayla Edwards, who placed second on the squad in batting and hits.
Missouri's 2023 campaign saw them log a 35-26 overall record that led them to the NCAA Norman Regional, where they started with a win over California before being eliminated by consecutive defeats. No one was more crucial to the Tigers' success than All-American Alex Honnold. In 57 games, she crafted a slash line of .396/.539/.779, all of which put her near the top of the SEC leaderboard, as did her 52 runs scored and 14 homers. Honnold was joined on the all-conference roster by infielder Jenna Laird, who swiped 30 bases as a junior while hitting .354.
Notre Dame enters the new year aiming for its 25th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, tied for the third-longest streak in collegiate softball. Among those they'll be leaning on to keep that run intact are 2023 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Carlli Kloss and All-ACC Second-Team pick Karina Gaskins. Kloss tied for the team lead in extra base hits a year ago, while Gaskins smacked a team-high 14 round-trippers while recording a .350 average.
While N.C. Central's regular season record was an unspectacular 19-35, they found their stride in the MEAC Tournament, rattling off four straight wins for their first conference title since joining the league. Sophomore pitcher and designated player Jaden Davis played the largest role in her team's triumph, earning most outstanding player honors and she's returned to try and replicate that success in 2024.
Iowa has its sights set on the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 and their 35 victories in 2023 were their highest total since they piled up 42 triumphs in 2009. While the Hawkeyes will have to find a way to compensate for the graduation of All-Big Ten First-Team selection Nia Carter, their returners include all-conference freshman team member Jalen Adams, who crafted a 2.02 ERA that ranked fourth in the league in 2023.
2023 Team Stat Leaders
Lifting the Lid
Since
Amy Hogue took over as head coach in 2008, the Utes have posted an 11-5 record in season openers, including a 6-1 in mark in their last seven lidlifters. This year will represent the first time the Utes have ever started a season in Florida.
Utah vs. Everyone
Utah's schedule for their season opening tournament in Florida includes four programs they've faced before and the Utes' first-ever meeting with N.C. Central.
Utah will open the year against the Army Black Knights, who they've only played once, a matchup won by Army at NCAA Regionals in 2002. The Utes are 3-4 all-time against Missouri, with the Tigers taking the most recent decision in 2019.
The Utes will be trying to earn a win over Notre Dame for the first time ever, as the Fighting Irish own a 6-0 mark in the all-time series. Utah can claim a 4-3 record against Iowa, though the Hawkeyes defeated the Utes when the teams last met in 2005.
Schedule Facts
The Utes are set to play 54 games in the 2024 regular season before the Pac-12 Tournament begins on May 8. That slate includes nine teams that ended 2023 nationally ranked and 14 squads who reached the NCAA Tournament. The Utes will play ball in five states as well and will travel to Mexico for the first time since 2020.
Ranked Utes
The Utes have been ranked as high as No. 13 in the national polls, which represents the highest preseason ranking for Utah since
Amy Hogue took over as head coach in 2008.
The Utes also ended the 2023 season ranked as high as No. 7, the highest ranking the program has ever achieved. The Utes were ranked for a total of nine weeks during the previous season.
Record Watch
After a 2023 campaign that saw a slew of records fall, more all-time marks are on the chopping block in 2024.
Haley Denning enters the year with three all-time records within reach, including the Utah record of 263 career hits, currently held by Hannah Flippen, but Denning needs only 28 more knocks to beat that total. She's also 31 steals and 42 runs away from being the career leader in both of those statistics.
Win Milestones
The Utes ended the 2023 campaign with 42 wins to their credit, tied for the fourth-most in program history and their .724 win percentage was the third-best ever. Utah also reached 40 wins for the seventh time in school history.
In Pac-12 play, the Utes piled up 15 victories, their most since joining the conference prior to the 2012 season. It also went down in the record book as the team's highest conference win total overall since 2000, when they collected 15 triumphs in the Mountain West.
Record Breakers
Utah's offense rewrote the program record book in 2023 and one of the new marks added was in runs scored, where the Utes surpassed the previous mark of 349, set in 2014, by racking up 351 runs.
The Utes also bested the previous program-highs in stolen bases (99), slugging percentage (.423) and doubles (84) and the squad's 316 RBIs also matched their most ever.
On the individual leaderboard,
Ellessa Bonstrom rose to the top of the list in all-time RBIs and walks. Outfielder
Haley Denning also became the third Ute in school history to reach 100 career stolen bases.
Ranked Record
The Utes succeeded in the face of one of the nation's toughest schedules in 2023 and posted an 11-11 record in 22 games against ranked opponents. That mark included two series sweeps against top 25 opposition. The Utes scored a home sweep of No. 5 Stanford in April, the highest ranked team Utah has ever swept in a series. The Utes also finished the regular season by taking three-in-a-row from No. 13 Oregon, the program's first-ever sweep of the Ducks.
Senior Class
The 2024 season will be the last one in a Utah uniform for the program's eight-person senior class of
Aliya Belarde,
Stella Bennett,
Haley Denning,
Chloe Doyle,
Sophie Jacquez,
Julia Jimenez,
Sarah Ladd and
Mariah Lopez.
Five of those eight student-athletes have achieved all-conference status and both Denning and Jimenez can claim All-Pac-12 honors in multiple seasons.
Coaching Staff Additions
Two new faces have joined head coach
Amy Hogue's staff for the 2024 campaign.
Courtney Martinez comes to Utah from Iowa State and
Kaija Gibson has donned Utah colors after spending two years with UCF.
Martinez spent six seasons with the Cyclones, helping the squad reset the program record for homers in a season three times and pile up 37 wins in 2019, the second-highest total in school history. She also helped tutor 2021 First-Team All-American Sami Williams.
Gibson, who not long ago was playing against the Utes with Washington, was part of two Golden Knights teams that won the AAC Tournament Championship to earn spots in the NCAA Tournament. In 2022, UCF rolled up 49 wins and Gibson and her colleagues were named the AAC Coaching Staff of the Year and the NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
